BBC Hiring for Junior Software Engineer – Digital Distribution Job at London, England Full Time

The Digital Distribution Edge Services team owns many core platform services which are essential to BBC Online.

These services operate at the very edge of bbc.co.uk and include being responsible for the caching and routing of thousands of www requests per second through to products (such as News, Sport and iPlayer), determining the country of each individual request for rights and location-specific purposes, and dynamically resizing and annotating images which are used all across bbc.co.uk.

We are looking for engineers to join our team to help develop and support these, and many other core services, as technologies and requirements evolve. In particular, we are looking for platform-focussed engineers who are continually willing to learn, take on new challenges, put forward their own ideas, and help the team and the platform evolve.

Main Responsibilities

What are the responsibilities?

Everyone in the team is involved in:

• Designing, implementing, testing and releasing new features across all our services
• Testing and releasing upgrades for core technologies, third party software, and dependencies
• Identifying trends, anomalies, and unusual patterns in the usage and performance of our services
• Seeing incidents through to resolution and implementing improvements, fixes and mitigations
• Updating the configuration for existing product teams and adding configuration to support new ones
• Ensuring that product teams can use our services and that operational staff can support them
• Creating clear documentation, leaving tidy environments, and following best practice at all times

In addition to the above the Junior Software Engineer role will be involved in:

• Bringing forward fresh ideas, identifying optimisations, and helping the team to continually evolve
• Attending internal technical community events in order to represent the team and share knowledge
• Talking with product teams all around the BBC to promote best practice while using our services

The role will report to the Software Engineering Manager.

Are you the right candidate?

You might be an existing Junior Software Engineer who is looking to work at a platform level, or someone with experience or interest in the relevant areas and looking to move into the Software Engineering job family.

Writing code is a small part of what we do, although this role is more about architecting, extending, configuring and testing services at a platform level to ensure that they meet performance and availability requirements.

Engineering at a platform level involves continually learning new skills and technologies and so we are keen to hear from people who have an interest in learning about the following:

• Developing and supporting Python, Java, Lua and Bash codebases for our APIs and supporting scripts
• Designing for and using third-party Cloud providers and their associated services and tooling
• Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery and associated tooling (such as Jenkins and Maven)
• Standard forms of testing including unit, load, security, soak and acceptance testing
• Building and configuring Apache httpd and NGINX web servers and modules to front our services
• Linux, including command-line tooling, package creation, system fine-tuning, and problem solving

A collaborative approach, regular peer review, joining in internal community-driven sessions and discussions, and participating in online training, are all encouraged and supported.
