About the role

We are seeking applications for people to join our Yuulong Outdoor Education team based at our purpose-built Yuulong Residential Campus commencing September 2022. The successful candidate/s will report to the Head of Campus and will have specific responsibilities in areas such as hiking and camping and health and fitness.

Clarendon students in Year 9 spend eight weeks living and learning in our residential program at Yuulong in the remote Otways region of Victoria. Our campus offers the unique opportunity to support the cognitive, creative and ethical development of our students.

Students learn skills during the residential program that will help them on their way through life. Apart from social skills developed through community living, students learn and apply physical, practical and outdoor knowledge and skills. These are often challenging, and deliberately so. Learning contexts reach beyond the classroom to their dorms, their community and the environment. The solo experiences, hiking expeditions on the Great Ocean Walk, surfing and community activities all contribute to the rich learning context offered by the program. Students will also engage with other domains of the Australian Curriculum, such as English, Mathematics and concepts of sustainability.

On nearly 50 hectares with sweeping views across the Southern Ocean, the Yuulong residential campus, just west of Cape Otway, includes two student dormitories, the Commons – with classroom, communal spaces and kitchen – and staff accommodation.

Selection criteria

• Relevant qualifications – for example, teaching qualifications, Wellbeing/Counselling, Outdoor Qualifications (for example, Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation)
• Wilderness First Aid Certificate
• SLSA certification, such as Community Surf Rescue or equivalent
• Excellent professional knowledge and understanding of working in a remote team environment
• Outstanding communication and listening skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and build positive and productive relationships with all staff to support the achievement of Clarendon’s Strategic objectives
• A strong understanding of the developmental needs of students in Year 9
• A strong understanding of the factors influencing student wellbeing and performance at Year 9
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible, resilient and empathetic
• Experience in delivering outdoor experiences in a similar context as Yuulong
• Additional relevant qualifications or certifications, such as bushwalking, surfing, cycling, etc.
• Light Rigid Bus License (desired).

Knowledge, skill and qualification requirement

The Outdoor Educator at Yuulong Campus has the responsibilities of leading and assisting Outdoor and Health Education through immersion in community, academic and outdoor adventures, fostering growth and helping students better manage the transition to adulthood. In exercising this responsibility, the Outdoor Educator will promote and supervise a strong experiential learning program that will effectively meet the outcomes of the Nine10 School at Ballarat Clarendon College. Student wellbeing is the key strategic priority of the role. The Outdoor Educator at the Yuulong Campus is required to build a strong nexus between pastoral care, teaching and student achievement.

Pastoral leadership aims to achieve, inspire and mentor students while at Yuulong Campus. Three key objectives of this position include:
