Avid4 Adventure Hiring for Rock Climbing Instructor at San Francisco, California Full Time

Avid4 Adventure, voted multiple times to Outside Magazine’s Best Places to Work list, is hiring a Climb Specialist for our summer day camps in the Bay area. You will become part of a team of outdoor professionals who receive support and mentorship from our camp leaders, grow their teaching skills, and enjoy a community of peers who live the values our camps teach.

Climb Specialists work with two group instructors and their group of up to thirteen campers on rock climbing days. During Rock Climbing Camp, the Climb Specialist co-leads (with two additional instructors) the same group of campers for the entire week. The Climb Specialist will set up and manage the logistics and safety of each top rope climbing site and offer comprehensive instruction specific to climbing. Instructors will mentor campers in the appropriate progression of technical rock skills and Leave No Trace principles related to climbing, as well as help campers develop confidence and foster teamwork in an outdoor climbing environment. Just as important, this position is about inspiring campers in new outdoor pursuits and having fun! *Climb Specialists may be asked to fill in for other day camp instructor positions based on enrollment of programs.

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide age-and developmentally- appropriate instructions in rock climbing, Leave No Trace principles, and teambuilding.
• Set up and manage the logistics and safety of top-rope sites.
• Co-lead day trips to multiple climbing sites.
• Provide exceptional customer service to parents and all participants in our programs.
• Serve as a role model for campers with appropriate behavior, language, attitudes, and activities.
• Provide guidance, supervision, safety, and comfort for participants during all activities.
• Thoroughly understand emergency action plans and help implement procedures if necessary.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of equipment, and report any damages to Camp Director.
• Maintain excellent communication between campers, parents, and staff.
• Participate in staff meetings and program meetings.
• Take an active role in the continual evaluation of campers, programs, and staff.
• Adhere to all of the policies and procedures of the American Camp Association.
• Other duties as requested by the Camp Director.

Job Requirements:

• Minimum 21 years of age
• Significant experience with outdoor rock climbing with the ability to set rock climbing anchors and oversee the climb site.
• Bachelor’s degree in science, education, or related field preferred.
• Participation in Avid4 Adventure’s in-house climb specialist training is mandatory.
• Experience leading youth and a passion for working with kids.
• Minimum of Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR prior to camp start date.
• High levels of organization, communication, and judgment.

Important Details

• Job dates: Training starts in late May. Camp programs run through mid-August. For specific dates and details on each location & program, please click here.
• Work week: Monday – Friday, about 40 hours/week
• Compensation starts at $25.41+/hour (additional pay for various climbing experience)
