Our schools: Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) has grown to become Australia’s largest national educational program for children on the autism spectrum, with 9 independent schools operating from 67 locations in NSW and South Australia catering approximately 1,200 students, with more than 100 classes hosted on the grounds of a less specialised school.

What you will do:

Looking for a role where you can make a real, lasting impact to the lives of autistic students? This unique opportunity incorporates the development and implementation of a work education and employment skills program in addition to a teaching role. You will work to support student strengths, interests and aspirations to ensure successful transition to post-school and adult life, such as in tertiary education or employment opportunities. The role involves the implementation of the program at Aspect Hunter School main campus in Thornton and will work closely with our high school classroom teachers and coordinators. You will be responsible for evaluating and documenting the project in order to ensure its ongoing success.

About the School: Aspect Hunter School provides placement for approximately 200 students on the autism spectrum from Kindergarten to year 12 at its main school at Thornton, and across its satellite classes within the Catholic and Department of Education schools in Newcastle, Hunter and Port Macquarie regions. Aspect Hunter School also offers a Distance Education program for students on the autism spectrum in years 3 to 8 from across NSW.

What we are looking for:

• Knowledge and/or experience in teaching in the disability sector, particularly with students who are on the autism spectrum, who may have an intellectual disability and/or challenging behaviours
• Understanding and/or experience of the barriers to employment faced by people with disabilities, injury and health conditions
• Proven ability to build rapport and maintain relationships with job seekers, peers and relevant agencies/key stakeholders towards gaining and maintaining sustainable employment opportunities
• Recognised University or Tertiary teaching qualifications
• Current driver’s license (per relevant state legislation)
• Working with Children Check/National police criminal history check (essential)
