Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) is one of the world’s largest conservation organisations, delivering and influencing effective conservation across more than 12.9 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre and the Top End.

AWC’s mission is the effective conservation of all native animal species and the habitats in which they live. With a focus on practical land management, informed by world-class science, AWC is implementing a dynamic new model for conservation.

The AWC Operations team delivers on ground land management activities at our network of 30 sanctuaries and partnership sites across Australia. The focus of these activities is on conservation outcomes that protects habitat for Australia’s native animals. We regularly seek Land Management specialists to deliver a range of land management programs centred around fire management, feral animal control and weed management. Members of our Operations team will have experience in these activities, as well as asset management and maintenance and be comfortable working in a remote locations in Australia.

AWC has regular vacancies in its Operations team and this advert is an open candidate pool for Land Management opportunities that may arise. This could include permanent, fixed-term or casual employment for the following Operations positions;

• Land Management Officers,
• Senior Land Management Officers
• Sanctuary or Operations Managers

About you:

To be successful in these roles you will have practical hands-on skills, experience in some or all of fire management, feral animal, weed control, site infrastructure maintenance and a love for physical outdoor work. Management positions focus on managing small teams delivering the programs and require skills in developing and implementing the work programs and the respective budgeting and team leaderships skills required.

We are looking for people who can demonstrate the following skills and experiences, or manage those with these skills:

• Experience in fire management, feral animal control and weed control
• The ability to use a range of plant and equipment and carry out some routine mechanical maintenance to:
• • 4WD’s, ATV’s, tractors.
  • Generators, pumps etc – any experience with solar power systems highly regarded.
  • Power tools including chainsaws, welders, and electrical tools.
  • Fire-fighting and weed spraying equipment.

• The ability to improvise and find practical solutions with limited resources.
• Experience living and working in remote areas and a willingness to spend extended periods in the field.
• Experience across a range of natural resource / land management functions is desirable but not essential
• Good communication and interpersonal skills across a wide range of groups including neighbouring landholders, scientists, traditional owners, volunteers, contractors and visitors is essential.
• Demonstrated capability to work alone or equally able to work as part of a small team.
• The ability to organise, co-ordinate, prioritise and execute a number of tasks in an efficient manner.
• Ability to use standard business software packages including Word, Excel, and email.
• A qualification or practical experience in a range of trades (building, mechanical, fencing, plumbing, welding, steel fabrication & electrical) is advantageous.
• An interest in nature conservation.
