The ASD motto, Reveal their secrets – Protect our own, summarises our roles: we collect foreign intelligence; we provide advice and assistance on information and cyber security; and we conduct offensive cyber operations.
To achieve its mission, ASD requires people with strong integrity and a mix of specialist skills, adaptability, imagination, resilience and creativity.
These abilities are needed to out-think and out-imagine some of the most testing adversaries and problems imaginable. ASD operates in the slim area between the difficult and the impossible. If you want to work with other smart, skilled people, ASD has an opportunity for you.
What can ASD offer you? Challenging, interesting and unique work that directly supports the Australian Defence Force and Australian Government decision-making; ongoing commitment to staff training including technical, business and interpersonal skills; close-knit and supportive work teams; and the possibility of national and international travel opportunities.
ASD value their employees and provide them flexible working arrangements, diverse career paths, a supportive work environment, study assistance opportunities, social and networking opportunities, support of casual dress, pay increases linked to regular performance reviews and relocation assistance for successful applicants.
About the Roles
Do you wish you could use your cultural and language expertise to help protect Australia’s interests and play a role in Australia’s response to strategic threats?
Would you like to combine your language expertise with other skills in a multidisciplinary role?
ASD is looking for people from all backgrounds with expertise in Languages Other than English (LOTE), with ranging levels of experience, to fill a diverse range of roles across the breadth of ASD activities. These range from highly specialised LOTE roles to multidisciplinary roles with a LOTE component. The work we do is unique, critical and incredibly rewarding.
We are interested in a wide range of languages. Our current priorities are languages of Northeast and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle East/Central Asian region.
We are looking for applicants with the ability to think critically, who are motivated to continue to learn and develop their skills.
Ideal candidates will be innovative, team orientated and have a passion for operating, building or supporting strategically important ASD capabilities.
Regardless of the role, we want people who are able to work within a team environment and use their curiosity, resilience and creativity to solve problems involved in out-thinking and out-imagining some of the most testing adversaries.
In return you can expect extensive training and ongoing support to further develop your LOTE skills to meet the changing demands of ASD activities.
You will have the opportunity to apply your LOTE skills, in combination with your other skills, experience and interests, in roles across the organisation such as:
ASD continues to grow and is always looking for talented people to join its mission. The following are examples of some of the different roles and tasks in which you could apply your LOTE expertise and other skills. Your role may include just one task on the list, or may involve aspects of several:

This will be a rolling-recruitment process, which means it will be conducted regularly. If you are successful in the application and assessment process you will be placed in a merit pool and may be contacted for further testing as positions become available. These may be ongoing or non-ongoing opportunities.
Throughout the year, ASD may contact you to reconfirm your interest in roles and update you with any relevant information. We request that you also let us know if your circumstances change and you no longer wish to remain in the merit pool.
