About the Roles

Would you like to combine your language expertise with other skills in a multidisciplinary role?

ASD is looking for people from all backgrounds with expertise in Languages Other than English (LOTE), with ranging levels of experience, to fill a diverse range of roles across the breadth of ASD activities. These range from highly specialised LOTE roles to multidisciplinary roles with a LOTE component. The work we do is unique, critical and incredibly rewarding.

We are interested in a wide range of languages. Our current priorities are languages of Northeast and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and the Middle East/Central Asian region.

We are looking for applicants with the ability to think critically, who are motivated to continue to learn and develop their skills.
Ideal candidates will be innovative, team orientated and have a passion for operating, building or supporting strategically important ASD capabilities.

The following are examples of some of the different roles and tasks in which you could apply your LOTE expertise and other skills. Your role may include just one task on the list, or may involve aspects of several:

Signals Intelligence Analyst/Foreign Language Analyst/Technologist Roles

• translate or interpret materials in languages other than English
• analyse and report on materials in languages other than English
• develop capabilities to perform your analysis using software development skills
• develop new methods of analysing and exploiting data for intelligence or information security purposes
• investigate large and complex data sets
• plan and conduct offensive cyber operations, including covert online operations
• prepare short-term or long-term information reports to government

Cyber Security Roles

• conduct cyber security research, analysis, and strategic threat assessments
• perform detailed cyber event analysis, intelligence assessments, and professional and policy advice for identified cyber threats
• plan, coordinate and conduct proactive cyber threat discovery
• assess and evaluate cyber threat intelligence for indicators of compromise

provide detailed planning, analysis and reporting on current and emerging threats to information systems.

Learning and Development/Customer Service Roles

• perform analysis, design, development, conduct and evaluation of LOTE learning and development activities
• select and manage the provision of external LOTE learning and development services
• maintain and contribute to the delivery of high quality LOTE customer service activities
• understand and advise stakeholders of LOTE-related products and services
• liaise with internal and external stakeholders to understand and meet needs and expectations
• recommend solutions to issues and problems identified in LOTE processes and workflows

Data Science and Data Analysis Roles

• use your understanding of language to extract knowledge from data
• perform computational analysis of linguistically complex datasets
• provide advice on the selection of data science tools
• work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team providing data services to stakeholders
• contribute to the development, evaluation, monitoring and deployment of machine learning and computer assisted translation systems
