About us

The Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF) is a federally funded research infrastructure (NCRIS) facility with nodes at the University of Adelaide, and in Canberra at the Australian National University (ANU) and CSIRO Black Mountain. The ANU node of the APPF is made up of a small diverse team who are dedicated to providing world class research support to national and international researchers and industry, and to building cutting edge research capacity to tackle this Century’s grand challenges. Our technical team creates scalable, open solutions that address existing bottlenecks in phenotyping and enable creation of FAIR data. Over the last 7 years we have created an extensive, open-source software stack that enables: capture, storage, access to and visualisation of numeric data, images and 3D data from lab and field; control of Controlled Environment hardware including growth environments, LED lighting and cameras; and, conditions monitoring, data logging and alerting. Our software solutions stack is designed to be agnostic to data type (numeric, image), provenance (equipment), and source (lab or field, chamber or glasshouse, farm or forest), thereby supporting easy integration of new systems and capabilities.

The Role

We seek an experienced software developer to take our software stack to the next level so it is more fully fit for purpose, well documented, published and available for use by other research facilities and the wider user community. Our software tools are currently used primarily in-house and need the attention of someone with excellent full-stack development skills who is able to see the big picture while remaining detail oriented and who understands how interoperable code creates scalable solutions.

In this role you will be responsible for both day-to-day maintenance of the software stack and providing technical support in that context to the plant growth team, as well as ongoing improvements and upgrades to existing software and development of new capabilities as needed for new projects or clients.

You will be the primary developer in a small team, so you must be able to work with others, contribute to varied projects as needed, and be able to balance ongoing maintenance and support with scoping and delivery of new projects and other longer term deliverables. This is not primarily a public facing role, but you must be willing and able to occasionally interact with non-technical researchers about project requirements.

Skills and Requirements

Demonstrated experience managing and delivering complex projects, attention to detail, ability to self-direct and learn new skills as needed matters more than any specific software package, as does an interest and aptitude for picking up new things and running with them.

• Development & Deployment tools: Docker, Docker Compose, Ansible, Git, GitLab CD/CI,
• Cloud: BackBlaze (rclone, B2 command line), Azure Functions, Microservices
• Misc: Data management, Deploying/Managing VMs, ip cameras, raspberry pi
• Bonus points if you have interests/experiences in: Agile, drones, 3D scanning, photogrammetry, geospatial, LiDAR, VR, AR.
