The Role
Under limited direction the Technologist/Technician will undertake complex technical and engineering tasks related to the application of software engineering within collaborative weapons research in WCSD. Tasks will involve the software development, testing and utilisation of un-crewed aerials and associated embedded computing and communication systems to demonstrate and support research developed within DSTG along with industry and/or academia. In addition, suitable documentation, reporting and administrative tasks will be key aspects of the position along with working within a high performance agile team environment.

About our Team
Weapons and Combat Systems Division (WCSD), as part of DST Group, applies science and technology to the capability analysis, development and operation of Weapon and Combat Systems relevant to the ADF. Areas of focus include weapon guidance technologies, assessment of both weapons and combat systems, tactical information exchange, physical force protection and national security to provide Defence with the ability to meet key drivers in the weapon and combat systems domain.

The Weapon Systems Technologies branch conducts scientific research and matures weapons technologies that enable ADF combat capability for precise prosecution of threats and assured delivery of effects. Our S&T capability includes:

• Sensing and perception with a focus on targeting in complex and contested environments;
• Trusted autonomous decision making under uncertainty for the effective delivery of effectors to neutralize threats with precision and low collateral damage; and
• Directed Energy as a potential disruptive battlefield capability.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have strong knowledge and background in software engineering and development utilising embedded computer systems or electronics along with knowledge in AI/ML techniques applicable to the control of multi-agent teams / systems.The ideal candidate would have a rigorous engineering approach to software development, concept exploration and testing. The ideal candidate will need the ability to work with other researchers to understand and implement research outcomes on real systems along with consideration to real world limitations (such as embedded computing constrains).The ideal candidate will need to support field trials and demonstrations that may occur in remote & isolated defence and non-defence locations.
