Do you enjoy speaking with people and are looking for a flexible role to fit with your lifestyle or other commitments?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is seeking to fill several non-ongoing Field Interviewer positions across Australia. These roles are based in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Melbourne, Hobart, Perth and Sydney.
The team has an immediate need to fill several temporary (non-ongoing) positions for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS). However, ongoing (permanent) positions may be filled through this process for other surveys should they arise.
About the area
The ABS Household Survey Program consists of the regular Monthly Population Survey and other surveys collectively known as Special Social Surveys.
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey (NATSIHS) and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NATSINPAS) are part of an established program of Indigenous statistics collected by the ABS to monitor the social well-being of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Information collected through these surveys is critical to better understanding the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
About the roles
Interviewers are the public face of the ABS and have an important role in building strong relationships with the general public.
In this role, you will conduct household interviews with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander households. These households are key data providers and assist in improving the understanding of the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The interviews you conduct with households will generally in their homes, however you may also be required to conduct interviews over the telephone.
The NATSIHS and NATSINPAS will require you to interview households about their health, focusing on health conditions, lifestyle factors, nutrition, health service use, social and emotional wellbeing, and physical measurements.
Prior to approaching households, information brochures are sent to householders before the survey. Some will register their contact details online or over the phone and you will phone the householder to make an appointment; others you will need to approach ‘at the door’ to make an appointment.
In addition to conducting household interviews, you will complete administrative tasks and communicate with your office colleagues using a supplied notebook computer and telephone equipment.
The ABS use a range of computer programs. You should have a high level of competency in general computer skills and the ability to quickly learn how to use ABS software and systems. We will provide full training on these.
For confidentiality reasons, Interviewers must work alone at all times, including when conducting telephone interviews in their home and are not permitted to take anyone with them in field except when accompanied by another authorised ABS staff member (e.g. a supervisor).
Skills, experience and availability
We are seeking applicants that meet all or most of the following requirements:
Favourable applicants will demonstrate an awareness of cultural sensitivities in approaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and people of diverse backgrounds in relation to any survey conducted by the ABS, and a willingness to continue learning and development on this topic.
How to apply

The application form will ask you to upload a resume, referee details, several screening questions and address three written response questions.
