The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking for individuals with a passion for data to join our Data Strategy, Integration and Services Division.

We have several roles available to full-time and part-time applicants in our Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide offices at an APS5 and APS6 level.

About the role and area

We are looking for people with a passion for data to fill a number of Data Professional roles including Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Security Adviser and Project Support Officer roles.

Data Engineer responsibilities include:

• setup and testing of data provider management systems, data collection instruments, data warehouses, data pipelines and data processing systems
• cleaning and editing microdata
• transforming data into a more valuable format by classifying and coding data; integrating datasets; aggregating data; and deriving new data items
• undertaking quality assurance of datasets (e.g. through macro-editing)
• confidentialising microdata to enable its safe use by external customers.

Data Scientist responsibilities include:

• discovering, experimenting with and wrangling data, as well as leading the use of new data sources, methods and products to meet the changing information needs of customers
• being innovative and experimenting with new methods, algorithms, codes and programs, and thinking of different ways to solve problems that may not be refined or well-developed
• applying a combination of software programming skills and statistical skills
• communicating and presenting findings to upskill others to use new techniques or methods and impart lessons learned.

Data Security Adviser responsibilities include:

• providing advice and guidance on the application of government data security requirements and practices in data-driven programs
• identifying and managing data security risks, balancing security requirements with operational and compliance needs
• administering the daily operations of secure data environments, including user access and support requests
• establishing, building and maintaining highly effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Project Support Officer responsibilities include:

• developing and maintaining relationships with external customers and internal data users
• clearly defining and specifying the data needs of customers
• supporting the management of a project including scheduling, risk management and documenting processes
• coordinating agreements and undertakings enabling their customers’ safe and effective access to microdata.

The roles will be filled in our Data Strategy, Integration and Services Division. We are responsible for bringing existing information together to create new integrated data assets, making this data available to users in a safe environment and engaging with external data custodians, and acquiring and analysing administrative data for statistical purposes.

What we are looking for:

To be suitable you should have most or all of the following skills, qualities and experience:

• experience with a statistical programming language, e.g. SAS, Python, R, Matlab
• strong project management skills and the ability to deliver quality outcomes within a dynamic and complex environment
• strong conceptual, analytical, and creative skills, including the ability to critically assess complex information and develop innovative solutions
• an ability to work with others and lead and manage a team
• advanced oral, written and presentation communication skills including the ability to engage with internal and external stakeholders
• an understanding of data security requirements and practices in government environment.

Academic qualifications in data engineering, data science, computer science, mathematics, economics, psychology, or other fields with a strong quantitative discipline or data security are desirable.

To be suitable for an APS6 you will need to demonstrate a higher skill/ experience level than at the APS5 level and a demonstrated ability to manage and develop people and create a high-performance culture.
