This role sits within the specialist Performance Assessment and Operations to Research (O2R) team, within the Research to Operations (R2O) group, who are responsible for verification of the Bureau’s forecasting systems. As a verification scientist, you will have a unique opportunity to apply and grow your statistical and numerical expertise and contribute to the verification of the Bureau’s Numerical Weather and Environmental Prediction (NEWP) models. Forecast verification is a crucial link in realising the benefits of the Bureau’s Research and Development Plan.
This role will be responsible for the maintenance of specific verification software packages and the development of improved verification systems that support NEWP operational lifecycles. You will work closely with Bureau colleagues across model development groups and forecaster communities to apply meaningful statistical measures to complex pre-production and operational models. The role provides ample future scope to contribute to verification beyond NEWP models in areas that could include statistical forecasts, radar/satellite-based nowcasts, climate outlooks and spatial warnings.
The R2O program was established in 2020 to accelerate operational improvements in the Bureau’s NEWP capabilities. R2O provides the development pathway to operationalise NEWP models and post-processing systems centred on the high-performance computing (HPC) production environment. The R2O program sits within the Science and Innovation Group (SIG) and is an integral component of the Bureau’s customer-centric model of resilient national operations.
To succeed in this role, you will need to draw on your statistical and software development skills and be ready to adopt enterprise tools and collaborative ways of working. The assessment results and visualisations that you produce will inform internal expert teams and support organisational reporting across a wide range of audiences.
As a senior scientific and technical professional, you have substantial relevant experience, though not necessarily as a verification researcher. The ongoing role will provide a great opportunity to continue to grow your professional expertise and be an integral part of a vibrant verification community in the Bureau. You will be responsible for high quality collaborative work and professional conduct commensurate with the Executive Level 1 classification in the Australian Government Public Service’s Integrated Leadership System.
