The Bureau of Meteorology’s Next Generation Modelling team supports, develops and delivers computing infrastructure to support the Bureau Research Program’s portfolio of research and development activities.

As a Software Infrastructure Engineer within the Next Generation Modelling team, you will update the modelling systems and software infrastructure used in the Bureau’s forecasting research systems, expanding the use of continuous integration and workflow tooling.

Forecasting systems at the Bureau make extensive use of the Cylc and Rose workflow management systems for managing tasks and dependencies involved in creating a numerical weather prediction. This is a domain-specific workflow system developed for running climate and weather models on High Performance Computing (HPC) systems written in Python and Bash shell.

The successful applicant will, with training in the workflow system, install and configure model workflows on the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) supercomputer systems as well as aid in the development of new workflows and contribute to the development of a workflow continuous integration testing system using Gitlab CI.

The ideal candidate will bring software development skills, experience working with compiled languages, an understanding of DevOps methodologies, and the ability to develop effective working relationships across the program. Through training and on-the-job learning, you will become an expert in the next generation of models and be part of the team that will deliver improved forecasts and services to all of Australia.
