The Bureau of Meteorology is continually improving its suite of convective guidance for use by its operational staff and the generation of downstream products. The quality of such guidance matters for the protection of life and the generation of substantial economic benefit by ways of improved the risk assessment ability by those affected by severe thunderstorms.

The starting point to improvements in the Bureau’s thunderstorm guidance is the infusion of ever improving science into the current operational systems and the demonstration of such improvement through verification of the system outputs against the available observations of the hazards and impacts generated by predominantly severe convection. As such you will need to have a good awareness of scientific developments around the world for the understanding and prediction of thunderstorms and its associated hazards. You will also need to the underlying technical skills to put new science concepts into systems for the generation of thunderstorm predictions. Extensive experience in forecast verification in the context of convective hazard prediction is needed to evaluate the quality of these predictions, which requires the use of observational data (radar, satellite, lightning) and hazard reports.

The position is embedded in the Verification and Decision Support team of the Bureau, and collaboration with other verification scientists within the team, and software engineers for the operational implementation of upgraded guidance will be part of your duties.
