The Bureau of Meteorology is Australia’s weather, climate, water, oceans and space weather agency, providing observations, forecasts, warnings, analysis and advice which impact the lives of all Australians, every day.

Decision Support Services (DSS) is a multi-disciplinary team of 150 meteorological, hydrological, climatological and community engagement specialists located at the Bureau’s capital city offices. The DSS program leads customer engagement with a focus on delivering reliable and responsive meteorological, climatological and hydrological services to the general public, all day every day, and to the emergency management and first responder sectors, especially in times of natural disasters.

The Hazard Intelligence Officers will work closely with the Australian Government’s National Situation Room providing daily briefs and advice on hazards and risk across Australia with an aim to inform and support the Australian Government to help communities respond to and recover from disasters. The roles will work alongside the Australian Climate Service (ACS) and its partner organisations, to provide an operational impact service integrating hazard information with vulnerability, exposure, and impact information to assess the potential consequences arising from hazards before they impact communities and enable planning and preparedness activities to minimise risk. The team will also work closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide support for planning, preparedness and response activities.

The ACS was established in 2021 to support better planning and preparedness for climate and natural hazards, and to enable better response and recovery to disasters when they strike. It is a partnership made up of world leading science, information and expertise from the Bureau of Meteorology, Geoscience Australia, CSIRO and Australian Bureau of Statistics.

To be successful in this role, you will be passionate about community safety, able to work resiliently and flexibly under pressure and to tight timeframes, and be comfortable in working extended and non-standard hours to support the Australian Government. You will be able to prioritise the criticality of information and communicate effectively to different audiences in support of their decisions.

You will have, or be able to build, a deep understanding of the operational role of the National Situation Room in supporting Australia’s national response to incidents, and shape your decision support service in response to those needs, feeding back your insights to drive continuous improvement of the Bureau’s services. ???

You will possess tertiary qualifications in science, ideally with a background in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, climatology, emergency services or similar high paced, operational environment. You will also have the ability to develop complementary knowledge across multiple hazard domains (e.g. flood and severe weather), timescales (including seasonal to decadal) and understand how that impacts emergency management response (including at the local community level).
