The Research Program is seeking a talented scientist to be a key member of a small team that builds, develops and supports systems for weather prediction with lead times between 0 and 10 days. The scope includes work improving the Graphical Forecast Editor (GFE) and its connections to other nowcast and forecast systems such as STEPS and IMPROVER within the forecast process.
The focus of the work is the collaborative development of weather forecast processes, and related software tools which are written in Python. These tools are used by the Bureau’s operational forecasters to edit and manipulate a database of gridded digital weather forecasts. This work requires significant analysis, design and science considerations. The role will include liaison with GFE users as well as working closely with the software developers providing requirements, guidance and undertaking testing to ensure the results will be successful in operations.
The work is likely to be largely related to (1) tools to assist nowcasting, (2) tools and services that can use the capability of ensemble and/or probabilistic guidance,(3) improving text formatters to allow greater automation and (4) contributions to developing the strategy for the Bureau’s future forecast process. Some of the work may be on a platform other than GFE.
The emphasis in this position is on the science (meteorology) and forecast process improvements, mainly through more fundamental changes to the GFE and its components such as the text formatters. Core competencies include experience in the derivation and operational use of meteorological fields, knowledge of physical and statistical aspects of weather forecasting, a grasp of computational algorithms, capabilities in scientific analysis, and a keen interest in research and systems development. Sound programming ability would be an advantage, particularly in Python, to code forecasting methodologies into small software tools.
