The Bureau is modernising and expanding its capability to verify the quality of its forecasts (e.g., forecasts of temperature, rain, wind, wave heights, thunderstorms) by comparing them to weather observations. This requires improvements to relevant observational data, software tools and the underpinning science for doing the forecast verification. Better understanding of forecast quality allows systematic improvements to the service which we provide to the Australian community.

As a data scientist, you will join a team of meteorologists, data scientists and software engineers and will employ best practices in forecast verification, software development and continuous delivery. On the science side, the position requires an understanding of how to process, store, analyse and visualise forecast and observation data to measure forecast quality. Experience in forecast verification is desirable. On the software development side, it is highly desirable to have experience with approaches to version control, automated testing and code reviews.

Working closely with other programmers, scientists and end users, you will participate in the design and ongoing development of the Bureau’s Jive verification system in consultation with staff from the Data and Digital Group and other scientists in the Verification and Decision Support team. Your tasks include contributions to expanding the Jive verification capability to encompass new datasets, new techniques, new forecast parameters and new verification metrics including the Jive transition into production within the Bureau’s operations in 2022. You will be processing large-gridded datasets (netCDF, hdf5, grib2) using python software, and you will also use PostgreSQL and PostGIS.
