Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Hiring for Community Educator Job at Massachusetts Full Time

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION: The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC), established in 2012, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to support scientific research, educate the community, improve public safety and inspire shark conservation.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy seeks a full-time Community Educator to support the nonprofit’s ecotourism and education programming including Gills Club, its signature STEM-based initiative. This position is an ideal opportunity for a self-motivated professional to contribute to a growing organization with his/her skills and experience in education and outreach.

Reporting to the Community Engagement Manager, the Community Educator is responsible for developing and running the programs and opportunities associated with this core component of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Gills Club Program

• Assume responsibility for current Gills Club programming and for planning and implementing opportunities for Gills Club programming in the future, with an eye toward expanding the impact of the Gills Club.
• Manage the Gills Club App and content updates.
• Manage the social media platforms for Gills Club.
• Manage all communications with the Gills Club Science Team, including the recruitment and onboarding of new science team members.
• Establish host site relationships and maintain them over time.
• Build partnerships and collaborations for Women in STEM programming.
• Work with the education team to create program content for Gills Club programs and manage the educational programs associated with the Gills Club.
• Work in collaboration with other members of the AWSC team to integrate Gills Club programming with Shark Center events and exhibits, and with community engagement opportunities.
• Recruit, schedule and train volunteers for the Gills Club.

• Manage marketing and promotions for the Gills Club and its programming.

Ecotourism

• Manage the scheduling of guests and communicate with guests to prepare them for trips and to ensure payment is secured.
• Coordinate with boating departments and AWSC to ensure that the logistics of scheduling and planning are finalized.
• Manage guest information to ensure individuals are put into the AWSC donor database.
• Lead trips in the naturalist role and represent AWSC onboard trips.
• Coordinate with partner organizations for specialty ecotourism events and trips.

Outreach

· Lead educational programs in schools and at the Shark Center Chatham.

· Assist with outreach events, such as hosting a booth at community events and attending events to represent the Conservancy.

· Prepare and organize materials and props for outreach events.

General Management and Administration

• Attend meetings and events.
• Assist with budget planning and implementation.
• Maintain consistent communication with the Community Engagement Manager, including honest and realistic assessments of what’s working and where additional support could be helpful.
• Maintain active connection and collaboration with peer staff members to ensure that the Conservancy is efficient and effective in its program delivery and engagement with various stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to target a message to a variety of diverse stakeholders.

· At least three years of experience in shark science education.

· Highly motivated with ability to work within a small team and take on tasks as assigned.

· Self-starter with an enterprising mindset.

· Ability to work weekends.

· Demonstrated skills in managing systems, organization and time management.

· Ability to work on small vessels in open water.

· Effective communicator with the ability to engage audiences of all ages.

· Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably a degree in environmental education, marine science, or wildlife conservation.

· Must pass a CORI check and fingerprinting background check.
