The Director of Auto Accounting is responsible for leading all aspects of program/client accounting for the Domestic Auto line of business, the management of all program accounting and financial reporting matters under US GAAP and US Statutory accounting and maintaining strong internal controls in these areas across the segment. This individual will foster and drive an environment focused on accuracy of program/client level accounting and continuous improvement to include the development of new capabilities and the evaluation of processes and procedures to standardize and create scalability. This individual will also be a leader in the transformation of the Auto accounting team as we implement a global ERP and move towards a more automated environment.

What will be my responsibilities for this position?

Ensure accurate, timely and high-quality Program/Client accounting results for US GAAP/Stat internal and external reporting across the Domestic Auto line of business.

• Manage all aspects of the program accounting results for monthly/quarterly/annual review for the Domestic Auto line of business. Coordinate with Finance, Reinsurance and Actuarial teams, to understand forecasted, planned and actual results and evaluate program/client variances to ensure accuracy against monthly/quarterly closing procedures.
• Coordinate, review, and challenge all Domestic Auto quarterly Financial Reporting deliverables, including Balance Sheet and Income Statement analytical review packages and support for Assurant’s consolidated financial statements (i.e., footnotes, roll-forwards, disclosures, etc.). Design and implement advanced data analysis to support the segment financial results.
• Ensure Domestic Auto’s quarterly results are accurate and in accordance with US GAAP/Stat and Assurant policies.
• Partner with Finance to review and understand Domestic Auto’s key business drivers on a quarterly basis.
• Prepare ad-hoc memos to document Program/Client transactions or other unique Accounting transactions or remediation efforts.
• Enhance existing accounting processes and controls to further strengthen reporting accuracy, efficiency, and clarity. Design and implement advanced data analysis to support the Auto line of business financial results.
• Support Domestic Auto’s Internal/External audit Director with US GAAP internal and external audits as needed, ensuring progress is being made, issues are raised, and remediation actions are completed in order to strengthen internal controls.
• Ensure Domestic Auto balance sheet accounts are reconciled in accordance with Assurant’s policy.
• Lead efforts to improve the close process for Domestic Auto and share best practices across teams.

Ensure accounting and reporting matters by Program/Client are accounted for in accordance with US GAAP/Stat and adhere to Assurant’s accounting policies.

• Liaise with Office of Accounting Policy for guidance on accounting and financial reporting matters, including issues, new/existing client contracts, M&A transactions, etc. as needed.
• Work with business partners to implement a formal process for identifying and reviewing client contracts prior to execution.
• Work with accounting teams to gain an understanding of client contracts and evaluate key accounting implications.
• Ensure client set up activities are accurate including set up of end-to-end data flow processes and reports are accurate for financial reporting needs.
• Partner with actuarial and finance teams, as needed, to resolve issues and finalize deal reviews.

Provide support for global accounting initiatives and special projects.

• Support the GFS project (migration to a Global ERP), provide Domestic Auto accounting perspective and participate in key workstreams for Domestic Auto to ensure the project is progressing as planned and key stakeholders are engaged.
• Support client conversions between policy administration systems providing oversight to general ledger mapping, UAT testing, and optimization of data flow and implementation of best practices in internal controls for converted clients. Provide oversight and escalation to project timelines and staffing needs during conversions.
• Support the Domestic Auto accounting and integration process for M&A transactions.
• Support transformation efforts in Domestic Auto, including identifying higher risk manual processes and make recommendations for process improvements, develop plan/framework with business partners, finance and actuary and work on resolutions with various Domestic Auto accounting teams.

Financial Responsibility

Support in management of overall Domestic Auto cost center budget.

What are the requirements needed for this position?

Education:

• College degree in accounting, plus CPA, chartered accountant or equivalent designation required:

CPA / ACA / ACCA / CIMA

Experience:

• Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in an Accounting/Finance leadership role
• Effectively managing teams remotely

Knowledge and Skills:

• Strong technical acumen; US GAAP/Stat knowledge including knowledge of insurance accounting principles and revenue recognition standard
• Data analytical and problem-solving skillset
• Comfortable with being a change agent as the organization continues to transform
• Proven experience in developing and improving processes and controls
• Solid understanding and experience with internal control frameworks
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Experience in coordinating audit processes (internal and external)
• Comfortable working and partnering with senior stakeholders
• Ability to manage numerous projects/deadlines and prioritize workload accordingly
• Ability to work collaboratively across departments and overcome challenges
• Strong Microsoft Office skills
• Experience leading teams and assessing and developing talent

What other skills/experience would be helpful to have?

• Property and Casualty Insurance experience, extended service contracts or vehicle service contracts a plus
• Experience in M&A transactions
• Experience with ERP systems and migrations (Oracle preferred)
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
• Public accounting experience

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $140,000.00 – $170,000.00 per year
