Appalachian Mountain Club Hiring for Backcountry Hut Crew at Gorham, New Hampshire Full Time

FALL SESSION: Mid August – End of October

Position Summary:

All hut positions require excellent guest service skills, backcountry familiarity, and a commitment to the AMC’s goals of conservation, education, and recreation. Employees are expected to continue the traditions of High Mountain Hospitality: providing good company, great food, and clean, comfortable accommodations to all. Just as important, you will be a member of a close-knit crew that lives and works together for the duration of the season which requires the whole crew to contribute to a positive, respectful, and inclusive community supported by open communication and effective group feedback discussions. Daily assignments (cooking, hiking in supplies, regular cleaning, and presenting educational programs) are all shared and will be organized by the resident “Hutmaster” (onsite location manager).

What you’ll be doing: 

• Provide a positive hut experience for all day and overnight guests.

• Share in the cooking, baking, and serving responsibilities for breakfast and dinner meals (guest counts dependent on hut placement and dates, but can range from 36-96 guests nightly)

• Hike food and supplies to the hut (40 pounds or more for 1.5 – 5 miles) twice a week.

• Present educational programs for overnight guests.

• Answer questions and give trail advice at the hut information desk.

• Clean public spaces, sleeping quarters, and bathrooms daily.

• Greet, register, and assist overnight guests.

• Handle transactions of retail items and basic backcountry supplies.

• Maintain and uphold all COVID-related safety and cleaning measures implemented by the AMC

• Voluntarily participate in search and rescue operations.

Compensation and benefits:

• Salary Range: $9.00/ hour
• Onsite housing + meals provided
• Free use of AMC Destinations: 4 nights per year
• Free annual AMC membership

• Matching 403(b): 4% with vesting schedule
• Paid Sick Time: eligible to accrue up to 10 days
