Summary:

The Education Director is responsible for developing, leading and growing Anza-Borrego Foundation’s education programs through the implementation of our five-year strategic plan. This entrepreneurial leader in environmental education will work to successfully build our fee-for-service programs and subsidized programming structure and develop financial strategies to ensure their success. As the Education Director, you will be responsible for managing ABF education programs including strategic planning and curriculum development, outreach, scheduling, implementation, conducting assessments and volunteer training and coordination.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.

Strategy and Leadership

• Collaborate with the Education Committee in the design and development of initiatives; build relationships and strategy to successfully launch seven pilot program areas.
• Develop annual strategic objectives and key results to formalize and grow educational and outreach programs; fit annual plan within the framework to scale programs over five years
• Develop and manage education programs budget in collaboration with leadership
• Responsible for curricula development in collaboration with an outside contractor
• Participate in the grant development process to ensure sustainable funding
• Establish, grow and maintain partnerships with local schools, teachers, partners and community organizations; actively collaborate to create meaningful outdoor education experiences

Management of Program Activities

• Organize and lead outdoor experiences and educational events, such as field trips, hikes, group stewardship opportunities, and similar activities, with the assistance of other staff, partners and volunteers
• Manage partnerships with other nonprofits, academic institutions, and government agencies
• Work collaboratively on program design and curriculum development
• Support staffing efforts, including employee recruitment, orientation, evaluation, and transition
• Prepare correspondence, tracking, reports, forms and schedules in a timely manner; proofread typed and other materials for accuracy and completeness
• Excellent organizational skills with ability to meet deadlines and independently manage multiple projects and timely follow-through, with flexibility to adapt to changing needs and to work effectively with minimal supervision
• Work collaboratively with communications specialist to develop educational materials to supplement educational and outreach programs, such as brochures, lesson plans and curricula
• Regularly conduct timely evaluations of education and outreach programs, review evaluation reports, and communicate results
• Identify opportunities for volunteer engagement; handle volunteer recruitment, selection, training and tracking as necessary

• Nonprofit experience preferred
• Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
• Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and deal tactfully, cooperatively, and effectively with other staff, the public, partners, volunteers, agencies, community organizations, site partners, and potential donors.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

• Ability to be on your feet for extended lengths of time; also involves walking on uneven terrain for up to five miles throughout the day
• Work is performed in an office setting with time regularly spent in the classroom, outdoor, and natural settings. The schedule is generally 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Weekends and evenings or early mornings may be required for periodic programs and events, and/or to coordinate program logistics.
• Ability to remain stationary at the desk and operate a computer/electronic equipment 6-8 hours per day; occasionally lift, carry, and position objects weighing up to 40 pounds; move around indoor and outdoor education spaces, including uneven surfaces for up to 6-8 hours; occasionally move around the office to access files, office equipment; answer phone calls to coordinate programs and answer questions. Supervisory Responsibilities: This job currently has no supervisory duties. This could change as needs of the education department grow.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience: At least five years related professional experience; degree in environmental education or similar. Community outreach experience is required. Experience working with nonprofit organizations and volunteers is preferred. Camp experience working with people of all ages and abilities and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with the public.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members, governmental bodies/boards, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of internet software and the Microsoft Office Suite of products including excel and word/mail merge.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A current CA driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required.

Pay: $60,000.00 – $65,000.00 per year
