Amey Consulting’s Highways teams impact the journeys of millions across the UK, by working in partnership with a range of clients and providing consultancy design services for Strategic and Local Highway networks.

Our teams work on both major design projects and local network improvements and undertake services on national to local frameworks; including those with Highways England Areas 10,13 and 14, to the A66 dualling programme and the Midlands Highways Alliance (MHA).

The Role

After a successful period with an ongoing and increasing workload, we are recruiting a Principal Highway Structures Engineer for our Midlands Highways Design Services team.

We have a large structures team in Birmingham with over 25 engineers and technicians. As a key member, you will join our 10 professionally qualified engineers who provide technical support and direction to our Graduate, Assistant and Civil Engineers together with experienced and less experienced CAD users.

As a Principal Structures Design Engineer, you will work on schemes based in a variety of locations across the UK and in liaison with other Amey teams, providing effective support on a range of projects and with line management responsibilities for several more junior design engineers.

It is likely that you will work on projects for clients such as the Midlands Highway Alliance and Highways England where you will use your experience of DMRB (and other standards) in structures assessment and design for new works or maintenance. We also support W&B stations and undertake assessment of larger structures for the MoD, so some experience in building design would be an advantage. Your team, under your leadership, will do highway structures design and assessment, with some building works for rail station improvements.

We take training and development seriously and actively encourage and support our engineers to become professionally qualified as chartered engineers. Due to this, you will take on the role as a delegated engineer and work towards acting as a Supervising Civil Engineer for our accredited training scheme.

We have a flexible attitude towards accommodating work life balance and flexible/agile working. This role would be based from Birmingham, with your time split between working from home and office based.

In a typical week you will:

• Lead on the delivery of schemes designs, as well as providing support to the Discipline Team Leader on various design duties including:
  • Team resource management and personnel direct line management
  • Planning, programming and cost estimation
  • Carry out site surveys, inspections, and supervision of colleagues on site
  • Prepare and review for issue, technical reports (e.g. AIP, Feasibility/Options Reports, Assessment Reports and other technical documents)
  • All aspect of structures design and assessment all using current DMRB and Eurocodes.
  • Expert technical advice to team
  • Reviewing design drawings
  • Production of Specifications
  • Supporting development of Engineers and Technicians
  • All aspects of CDM compliance

• Produce Safe Systems of Work in line with the Amey Zero Safety Code
• Drive effective health and safety practices
• Ensure compliance with all relevant technical standards
• Work to programme to deliver specified designs on time
• Assist in the preparation of financial estimates and monitoring of the budget for projects including the planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources
• Represent the business stream in multi-disciplined project teams
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with the client and other relevant stakeholders
• Ensure innovation and best practice is highlighted and adopted where practicable
• Keep up to date with your own personal development to ensure the natural growth of the team
• Drive professional development of the team members to all achieve the best they can.

We want to hear from you if:

• You have a Bachelors or Masters degree in an appropriate subject
• You are Chartered, held with an appropriate professional body – specifically CEng MICE or CEng MIStructE
• You are capable of acting as an engineering lead
• You are able to demonstrate developed experience and expertise within the relevant technical field, probably gained in a Senior/Principal/Associate Engineer role or equivalent
• You are an accredited trainer with a relevant professional institution, e.g. Delegated Engineer or Supervising Civil Engineer for the Institution of Civil Engineers You are able to demonstrate an ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements
• You are experienced in undertaking project related tasks associated with health, safety and welfare, e.g. Construction (Design and Management) Regulations
• You are experienced in the application of technical governance procedures within a consulting engineering environment
• You have knowledge of technical governance procedures and how they are applied within a consulting engineering environment
