Financial Controller (Part or Full Time) to growing & socially positive company

Alertacall provides its services to approximately 60 organisations, primarily housing associations, local authorities and charities. The company also has a private customer base, dealing directly with UK based households.

Its income model has traditionally been straightforward and based on multi-year recurring revenue contracts, and whilst income of that nature will continue to grow – the company has started also selling a new range of products and services that are more complicated in nature. The complexity of its billing models, external financial relationships, and cash flow requirements have therefore all increased and so it would now benefit from increased financial controls and support modelling the financial impacts of decisions.

Alertacall is therefore looking for a financial controller, who has previously been involved in a growing business to work Part or Full Time – to have overall responsibility for the accounts function. This will include modelling the impact of new decisions that are being made on a weekly basis on future cash flow, overseeing and providing resilience to the book-keeping function as well as implementing controls and reporting to ensure financial excellence.

The successful candidate will need to work from the company’s offices approximately 3-4 days a month in the South Lakeland or Warrington areas, and occasionally attend meetings with the company’s accountants in those areas, but can otherwise be home based if required.

Required competencies

• Management of accountancy functions and book-keeping personnel
• Financial modelling and reporting e.g. scenario based cash flow forecasting
• Sage expertise and similar accounting packages
• MS Excel or other spreadsheet software skills (including charting)
• 5+ Years experience in a similar role for growing company

Duties will include

• Overall responsibility for the accounts function reporting directly to the CEO.
• Management, leadership and support of the book-keeping function.
• Scenario based financial forecasting (modelling impacts of decisions).
• Annual budget preparation, rolling monthly and quarterly forecasts.
• Preparation of monthly management accounts.
• Creation of invoices and responsibility for all money collection.
• Working on projects to improve financial efficiency across the organisation.
• Liaison with external accountants, auditors and banks including tax planning, compliance, VAT returns and production of annual accounts.
• Research and arrangement of finance for asset and stock purchases.
• Payroll and pension management with support of accountants.
• Regular research of best company savings accounts for cash holdings.
• Research and implementation of software and systems for expenses.
• Continuous adaptation of chart of accounts to ensure fitness for purpose.
• Research and liaison with utility suppliers to ensure best value for money.
• Working with the CEO to hold departments to account over expenditure.
• Responsibility for full P&L and balance sheet.

Qualifications required

• ACA / ACCA / CIMA Part Qualified or Qualified.
• Excellent Mathematics, Business, Analytics or Economics qualifications or other evidence of ability in one or more of those areas.
• Full UK driving licence.

Recruitment process

• Initial telephone or remote video interview so all parties can ask basic questions.
• Participation in several tests including potential psychometric tests.
• In person interview with CEO and other team members.
• References will be taken and extensively followed up.
• Subject to references the role will then be offered.

Remuneration and other details

• Salary range £30k to £50k (pro-rata) depending on experience
• Average of 24 to 40 hours per week with flexibility on working hours
• 30 days (pro-rata) per annum holiday allowance (including any statutory holidays)
