Alaska Tales Hiring for Captain- Whale Watching Full Time

Alaska Tales Whale Watching in Juneau Alaska is seeking a full time captain for the upcoming summer 2022 season. Pay is for April 20th-November 1st.

SUMMARY:

Perform daily tours. Captain is responsible for safe operation and safety features, basic maintenance, accurate logs, overseeing Deckhand/Naturalist duties and setting a good example for wildlife viewing ethics and methods on the water. Season: Mid-April to October. Schedule varies, 5-6 days a week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

– Operate company vessels and conduct regular daily whale watching tours

– Perform ethical and responsible wildlife viewing practices

– Oversee upkeep and maintenance of vessels

-Oversee Deckhand/Naturalist duties

– Maintain a high standard of quality for our tours

– Maintain positive relationships with staff

– Adhere to company standards

– Maintain a daily ship’s log

– Provide oversight on all safety issues

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS & SKILLS

– 50 ton USCG Masters License

– Marine Radio Operator Permit

– Strong outboard boat handling skills preferred

– Detail oriented, safety-oriented work ethic

– Must be team oriented and enjoy working with others

– Must exhibit excellent time management skills

– Capable of working long hours/flexible hours

– Capable of lifting 50 pounds

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:

Well versed on local & federal laws regarding wildlife viewing. Must be familiar with the Marine Mammal Protection Act, NOAA regulations as well as Whale Sense guidelines and adhere to them strictly. Background in ecotourism preferred, specifically viewing cetaceans.

REQUIREMENTS:

– 50 ton USCG Masters License

– Current TWIC credential

– Current first aid and CPR certification

– Subject to pre-employment and/or random drug testing

– Cell phone with text/voice mail

– Reliable transportation
