Alaska Geographic seeks a dynamic individual to coordinate our diverse science education programs in Denali National Park and Preserve. The position is at the Murie Science & Learning Center (MSLC) in Denali Park, Alaska. The role will also have statewide responsibility for creating, coordinating, and delivering environmental education programs.

Alaska Geographic is the primary nonprofit partner for the National Park Service in Denali. In addition to supporting the education and research operations of the MSLC, Alaska Geographic’s partnership with NPS creates interpretive materials and exhibits and operates several park stores within Denali. Alaska Geographic oversees more than 40 stores throughout the state and youth education programs in the Southcentral region.

The MSLC is a cooperative effort of partners supporting education and research efforts in Alaska’s northern parklands. Alaska Geographic supports the mission of the MSLC through a wide variety of experiential education programs for all audiences. Our focus is to disseminate science through compelling and hands-on education offerings.

The Education Manager will work as a member of the Alaska Geographic and National Park Service education team on all aspects of education programs and management of the MSLC. Principle duties include program development, staff supervision, logistics coordination, risk management, and marketing assistance. Secondary responsibilities include program delivery and assisting in cooperative efforts with the National Park Service.

The education programs include guide science excursions, classroom presentations, informal education through our exhibits and information desk, accredited multi-day field courses, and a wide variety of custom education programs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Oversee MSLC department staffing needs (e.g. recruitment, interviewing, hiring, new hire and ongoing training, performance evaluations, etc.); determine staffing level, seek budget approval and submit position requisitions.
• Lead group of Science Educators in developing and providing outdoor education and environmental education and interpretation including curriculum development and material preparation.
• Design, research and implement training and professional development opportunities for staff, interns, and participant groups delivered through custom programs and Field courses and virtually.
• Develop and actively nurture relationships with participants and/or partner organizations to increase the impact of MSLC programs and educational outreach.
• Coordinate all logistical aspects of the MSLC summer education program.
• Participate in budget development and monitoring of expenses.
• Work with AK Geo staff to develop, define & implement a statewide nature education scope of services, and programs.
• Conducts staff reviews & audits environmental education programming, providing feedback to staff & managers
• Assists in the development of MSLC long-range goals, objectives, program structure, and overall direction for the center.
• Continue to strengthen the National Park Service partnership.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree required
• Ability to work in a fast-paced team setting and toward a common goal.
• Must be able to work well under pressure.
• Experience developing, coordinating, and presenting science education or interpretive programs.
• Knowledge of Alaska & Denali’s natural and human history, science and research.
• Ability to organize, prioritize and efficiently complete multiple and diverse tasks.
• Ability to track many important details and maintain a high degree of accuracy.
• Exceptional communication and team-building skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft applications and common web media.
• Bachelor’s Degree &/or extensive experience in education, environmental science or related field.
• Current Wilderness First Responder certification or ability to obtain certification before or soon after beginning the position.
• A valid driver’s license with 5 years driving experience and a good driving record.
• Position subject to a background investigation prior to start

The Education Manager position has an intense summer season between

April and September, with staff on duty every day of the week. This supervisory position can require attention any day of the week. Because of the multi-directional operation and its many important logistical details, the coordinator must be able to balance these responsibilities while maintaining a healthy and nurturing work environment.

The Education Manager is a full-time, non-exempt 10-month position with of up to two months of unpaid leave. Long-term housing is not provided, seasonal housing is available April to September. Compensation includes a generous benefits package and a salary commensurate with applicable experience.

Pay: Hourly $26 – $29.00 per hour.
