Water Microbiology Lab Scientist

Summary

In support of Rhode Island’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Health (RIDOH) RIDOH has retained Knowledge Services to provide temporary assistance with various activities within RIDOH’s State Health Lab. The overall goals of the work are to operationalize wastewater based COVID surveillance and the use of this data for public health decision-making to control COVID transmission.

The position will last approximately 6-12 months and will be based on the needs of the COVID-19 Response Unit. Chosen candidates will be responsible for the following duties listed below, along with any related tasks that might arise during their employment, as directed by supervisor:

Responsibilities:

The incumbent will perform a variety of environmental sample handling, standardized tests, and quality control in an environmental microbiology laboratory; to perform standardized tests for COVID-19 in wastewater and to assist in the performance of complex examinations and tests; and other related work as required.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technician occupation. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles;
• Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace;
• Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Interprets findings and makes recommendations;
• Performs preventive maintenance, periodic inspection and performance testing of equipment and instruments.
• Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement; Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results. Interprets results and suggests follow-up tests selection or procedures.
• Monitors supply inventories
• Maintains laboratory logs and records
• Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements:

• A working knowledge of standard laboratory instruments and equipment and the techniques and procedures concerning their use
• Working knowledge of the basic theories, principles, and practices of clinical or microbiological laboratory science
• Working knowledge of standard laboratory biosafety precautions
• The ability to exercise judgement in preparing samples for testing, determining appropriate test procedures, and interpreting results.
• The ability to perform clinical or microbiological laboratory science tests with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers
• The ability to prepare clear and concise reports; and related capacities and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Preference will be given to candidates with an active certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) is required. (Copy of certification must be submitted with application package.)
• Prior experience collecting wastewater samples and managing sample collection activities
• Experience with laboratory procedures and microbiological water quality testing
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Proven ability to work independently

Education:

Candidates must have one year of specialized experience, which includes providing testing in a laboratory, in addition to the following education:

• A Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, AND successful completion of a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program. OR
• B.A full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based molecular biology program or environmental microbiology program. OR
• A Bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics, AND five years of microbiology or molecular biology laboratory experience. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of molecular biology or microbiology described above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, environmental microbiology testing laboratory or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in molecular biology or microbiology laboratory work.

The position involves research project coordination and possible for local (city and state) travel up to 25%.

Schedule- Must be able to provide support 21-35 hours a week minimum with ability to work off-hour shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed with COVID-19 volumes.
