About the Role

The Director of Marketing & Sales (DMS) is a key member of the senior leadership team and provides strategic guidance in all aspects of marketing, public relations, communications, sales programs, audience development and retention, brand management, and earned ticket sales. They execute strategies to meet the organization’s goals and ensure long-term success. This forward-thinking individual will oversee efforts to build a strong and recognizable brand to create a compelling narrative for the overall brand and each individual season. In partnership with the Managing Director and Artistic Director, the DMS is charged with building brand and mission awareness for ACT to elevate the brand within the consciousness of Seattle.
With multiple major milestones on the horizon, the Director of Marketing and Sales will be integral to planning for the celebration of these major milestone events, as well as lead organizational efforts to re-brand, and rebuild ACT’s website. It is the responsibility of the DMS to help launch ACT into the next 60 years with vigor, innovation, and ambition.
The Director of Marketing & Sales leads ACT’s efforts to refine, expand, and innovate marketing and sales practices, and to develop strategic plans for the marketing teams. They work to grow new audiences, while retaining and deepening relationships with current audiences, through innovative audience development and retention initiatives. The DMS drives earned revenue through ticket sales and devises strategies to maximize public participation in ACT’s activities, ensuring that the team sets and achieves ambitious objectives.
The DMS manages the marketing and sales strategy including planning, implementation, and promotion of multiple subscription campaigns, single tickets promotions, print and letter packages, telemarketing, and advertising. They ensure that all advertising campaigns, external messaging, and collateral materials fully represent the mission, vision, and values of the organization. The DMS strives to create accessible pathways to audiences that have been historically underrepresented at ACT and develop an audience as diverse as the programming in all marketing materials, social media platforms, and press strategies.
They will maintain a deep understanding of current technologies in marketing and ticketing, as well as the skills to analyze and use data to guide the work of their teams. They are innovative in their engagement efforts by championing the use of digital and new media to foster a culture of experimentation and fast learning, testing a variety of channels, messages, and touchpoints in the customer journey.
This role directly supervises four full-time staff (Digital Media Manager, Design and Communications Manager, Sales and Marketing Analyst, Patron Services Manager) and branding-, graphics-, and PR-contractors. The DMS oversees the Patron Services and Box Office teams, who support the unmatched customer service that ACT is known for. They build a connection with staff that supports project success and the overall success of this ambitious organization.
As one of the primary external voices of ACT, they must execute that voice with care, creativity, authenticity, and good judgement. This role actively participates as a key member of ACT’s staff in helping achieve all goals related to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and Belonging.

About You
Qualified applicants will have senior-level marketing, sales, and communications experience. A proven record of achieving earned revenue results and interpreting statistical data that advances decision making is required. Marketing skills in patron acquisition, loyalty and retention, strategic branding, market research, direct marketing, and digital marketing, including web and social media, are critical to success in the role. Strong written communication and public presentation skills and a passion for the arts are essential. This role requires the ability to effectively manage a team, work in a fast-paced environment, meet multiple deadlines, organize time and priorities, the flexibility to welcome and embrace change, and the ability to balance the challenges inherent in an active and lively theatre environment.
The ideal candidate will be a resourceful, results-oriented leader with the ability to think strategically, generate new ideas and set priorities. They will also be a skilled manager, gifted collaborator, and an effective delegator who can build on group dynamics and set high expectations with the marketing team. They will be a compelling, persuasive leader with the ability to move a team forward—direct s, executive leadership, and peers—by inspiring and motivating people with creativity and energy.
Qualifications Also Include:
· A comprehensive understanding of marketing theory and practice with preference given to those with performing arts experience
· Ability to grow an audience with in a well-established mature and highly competitive marketplace
· Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills – characterized by the ability to listen, to speak, and to write well – with a strong commitment to audience centric communication
· A high degree of professionalism and integrity
· Solid understanding of budgeting and forecasting as well as experience in guiding the entire marketing process from the ground up
· A knowledge of theatre in Seattle and experience with Tessitura a plus

Physical Skills/Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to operate a computer and telephone. Strong written command of the English language with the ability to be understood, and the ability to work in an open office environment. Must be comfortable with cold calls and other forms of direct, initiated conversation.
Work environment includes a variety of environments typical in a theatrical environment, administrative office spaces, and public spaces.
