About us

Abrome is a Self-Directed Education community that serves young people and their families. Abrome provides Learners with a psychologically safe space that is anti-oppressive and consensus based, where young people have the autonomy to engage in meaningful learning experiences and unlimited free play in a mixed-age setting.

We are looking for one person to join our team of three.

In that cover letter please answer the following five questions:

• Why are you interested in Self-Directed Education, as opposed to conventional forms of schooling?
• What do you believe every child should get from their education?
• At Abrome we are focused on liberation from oppressive norms and institutions. How would your work at Abrome support liberation?
• Please describe your experiences in the outdoors (work or play). Are you able to be outdoors in the heat and the cold, and rain and snow?
• How long would you estimate your daily commute to Abrome would be (78733), and are you comfortable with such a commute?

Those who are serious will need to interview with us, review a variety of materials (books, articles, webinar) on what we do and what Self-Directed Education is, receive CPR/First Aid training, and shadow with current Facilitators for at least 3-weeks (and perhaps longer). We are only able to seriously consider those who live in the Austin area and who are available immediately.

We are looking for people who believe that all people should be free of oppression and have autonomy over their lives. Children are people, too.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serve as a Facilitator, consultant, guide, mentor, cheerleader, and confidant to all Learners

• Be a paragon of positivity; never embarrass, insult, yell at, or shame a Learner

• Co-create culture with Learners and other Facilitators in an environment focused on anti-oppression

• Promote a culture of numeracy, literacy, and dialectical inquiry

• Center the needs and voices of those who have been marginalized and oppressed, historically

• Always arrive fully prepared, on-time, and eager to support Learners

• Document the growth and learning experiences of Learners for internal purposes

• Participate in brainstorming sessions, learning center improvements, and research efforts

• Attend promotional events and participate in the admissions and recruiting processes

• Be responsive to the questions and needs of Abrome Learners and their families

• Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities to include Agile Learning Facilitator trainings

• Regularly write or create articles, blog posts, white papers, social media posts, or video blogs on behalf of Abrome

• Serve as a role model inside and outside of the Abrome learning center

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A wholehearted belief in the Emancipated Learning education model

• Must respect and trust kids; enjoy being around young people ages 4-19

• An unqualified belief that every young person can improve the human condition

• Demonstrated love of learning

• Ability to lead by example; never rely on positional authority

• Ability to function at a high level in spite of chaos or uncertainty

• Commitment to personal improvement and professional excellence

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Leadership, organizing, or facilitating experience

• Coaching or mentoring experience

• Prior experience working or volunteering with young people between the ages of 3 and 19

• Experience working with diverse groups

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Unschooled or previously enrolled at a Self-Directed Education community

• Prior experience with alternative education models

• Prior experience working with young people in outdoor settings (e.g. adventure playground, forest school, nature school, outdoor summer camp)

• Professional or skilled (e.g., animator, artist, dancer, engineer, martial artist, musician, psychologist, therapist, yogi)

• Multilingual

• Relevant education or significant life experiences

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Facilitators who demonstrate uncommon levels of commitment to Learners and the Emancipated Learning education model, as well as leadership potential, will have the opportunity to take on significant responsibility as Abrome grows

Pay: From $3,000.00 per month

COVID-19 considerations:
Pandemic plan is posted on our website. We have 5 risk levels. At level 5 we are remote, level 4 completely outdoors, and a mix between indoor & outdoor at lower levels. We always mask near each other. HEPA filters w >6 ACH in each room, >8 in bathrooms.
