Learning Mentor

Actual Salary £17262- £19063 (Term Time only)

32.5 hours Monday 8.45-4.20, Tuesday-Thursday 8.45-3.30 (25 mins lunch)

Abbey Hill School & College is a popular, successful and over-subscribed school meeting the needs of children and young people with learning difficulties, communication & interaction difficulties and/or Autistic Spectrum Conditions. Our governors are seeking to employ an inspiring, suitably experienced and qualified Learning Mentor. The successful applicant will be committed to ensuring the best outcomes for our students and must have excellent interpersonal, numeracy, literacy and IT skills.

Job Purpose: To motivate, challenge and empower children and young people to achieve their potential by:

• Providing a complementary service which enhances existing support provided by teachers and pastoral staff in school.

• Providing support to overcome barriers to learning and to minimize the range of risks which may lead to disengagement from school in order to promote effective participation, enhanced learning and raised aspirations and social inclusion.

The successful candidate will:

1. To be involved in the identification of existing and potential barriers to learning and the identification of vulnerable pupils who would benefit most from learning mentoring, working with pupils and others to draw up and implement action plans, Positive interventions and IEP’s for individuals who would benefit from mentoring support.

2. To establish 1:1 mentoring relationships with identified pupils aimed at motivating, challenging and empowering them to achieve their goals as defined in plans above and reduce the risk of pupils becoming involved in behaviours which could lead to exclusion from school.

3. To contribute to the development and delivery of programmes which assist to develop positive attitudes towards themselves and others and encourage enhanced motivation and self-esteem.

4. To develop positive relationships and maintain contact with families/carers of pupils; keeping them informed of needs and progress and securing positive family support and involvement.

5. Work with pupils not working to normal timetable

6. Work as part of a committed and friendly team.

Minimum essential qualifications

• Learning Mentor Qualification desirable but not essential
• Knowledge and compliance with policies and procedures relevant to child protection and health and safety
• An ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence through the medium of English
