SUMMARY
Engineering Managers will consult with management,
production, and marketing staff to discuss project specifications and
procedures, and to coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to
accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities. The
Engineering Manager will study product requirements carefully to find ways to
reduce waste and improve performance. The Engineering Manager will discuss and
lay out project specifications and make detailed plans to accomplish goals.
The Engineering Manager will recruit employees, assign,
direct and evaluate their work; and oversee development and maintenance of
staff competence. They will train new employees how to safely use machinery and
follow procedures. They will write performance review and solve internal
issues.

FUNCTIONS

Oversee
the review of production schedules, engineering specifications, process
flows, and other information to understand methods that are applied and
activities that take place in manufacturing and services
Figure
out how to manufacture parts or products, or deliver services, with
maximum efficiency
Develop
management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis
more efficient
Supervise
quality control procedures to resolve production problems or minimize
costs
Design
control systems to coordinate activities and production planning in order
to ensure that products meet quality standards
Work with customers and management
to develop standards for design and production
Confer
with clients about product specifications, vendors about purchases,
management personnel about manufacturing capabilities, and staff about the
status of projects
Perform
time studies and create plant layouts
Process flow mapping and process
flow improvements
SKILLS
and ABILITIES
Ability to use
creativity and ingenuity to design new production processes in many kinds of
settings to reduce use of material resources, time, or labor while
accomplishing the same goal
Ability to
create new systems to solve problems related to waste and inefficiency
Must
have logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative
solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
Good listening and communication skills to solicit feedback from
customers, vendors and production staff in order to fully grasp ideas and
problems the first time
Must have good math skills to use the principles of calculus, trigonometry,
and other advanced topics in mathematics for analysis, design, and
troubleshooting
Ability to problem solve i n designing facilities for manufacturing and
processes for providing services
Must have speaking skills to explain instructions to production staff or
technicians. Being able to explain concepts clearly and quickly to prevent
costly mistakes and loss of time
Must have writing skills to create documentation for other professionals
or for future reference. The documentation must be coherent and explain thought
processes clearly so that others can understand the information
WORK
ENVIRONMENT
While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to supervising
moving mechanical parts and powered hand tools. The employee is occasionally
exposed to wet, humid or hot conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed
to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is
usually moderate.
The employee
will be working in both an office and plant environment. Some duties will require time spent in the
office doing data analysis, layouts, processes, etc. Other duties will require the employee to be
on the floor overseeing time studies, working with production workers and
troubleshooting.
EDUCATION
and EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering
or equivalent education and work-related experience. Minimum of 3-5 years Industrial Management Engineering
type work experience.
PHYSICAL
DEMANDS
While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use
hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee
frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk or
hear. The employee must frequently lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral
vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
