The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans is the only the national sports team of Cairns and competes in the NBL – one of the world’s premier basketball leagues. Boasting the NBL Head Coach of the Year Adam Forde and one of the most youthful and dynamic rosters in the team’s history, the club is on an upwards trajectory with exciting developments to come on and off the court.

The community-owned organisation continues to be integrated with the grassroots of basketball and has strong ties to Cairns Basketball Inc., in both its current operational structure and in future strategic planning.

CBI is one of the most successful associations in Queensland and continues to advance in their development of junior talent, coaches, and referees. Together, both organisations share the common goal of driving the growth of the game and promoting participation in the region.

As such, an important role has been identified that will further strengthen this connection, with a Digital er required to help deliver the media and communications of both prominent sporting organisations, and become the voice of basketball for Far North Queensland.

The Digital er will get to cover all levels of basketball: NBL, NBL1 and grassroot tournaments including national, state and local competitions. Editorial will include games s, interviews, team news, profile features and competition coverage.  

This is a great opportunity for a budding communications professional looking to for the opportunity to shape their sports media career, craft high-level original content and be responsible for storytelling across numerous platforms.

Responsibilities:

• Write editorial for taipans.com and cairnsbasketball.com
• Content capturing at, but not limited to: competitions, training, games, events, interviews
• Identify storylines, content opportunities and creative concepts
• Edit and produce short form videos for online publication
• Create and develop editorial content for both organisations
• Execute and maintain annual content calendar
• Manage the Taipans and CBI storytelling across all digital platforms, populating social media channels – Meta, X, LinkedIn, Youtube, TikTok etc.
• Take accountability of digital metrics, focusing on growth, trends and audience retention

The ideal candidate will:

• Writing, ing and interviewing skills
• Have an understanding of the social media landscape
• Be passionate about sports and creating digital sports content
• Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
• Work well under pressure and in a “live game” environment 
• Have excellent attention-to-detail (proofreading) and work to deadline
• Have flexibility to work evenings and weekends during game days and events

Requirements:

• Experience in sports media or communications role
• Capable of capturing professional content – video, photos, audio, mobile
• Those with video editing experience will be highly regarded
• Relevant tertiary qualification: eg. Communications, Digital Media or similar preferred
• Possess a Blue Card or be willing to apply
