The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. We are responsible for managing major capital construction projects, snow and ice control services, along with road maintenance and repair services.
We’re recruiting for a Construction Supervisor to support the Western District. About Our Opportunity
Under the general supervision of the District Bridge Engineer, the Steel Bridge Supervisor plays a crucial role in maintaining the Department’s capital investment in steel bridges and ensuring the safety of the public that use these bridges. This involves inspecting steel bridges for damage or deterioration, planning, organizing and supervising the work of the Steel Bridge Crew and inspecting the completed work.
Primary Accountabilities
You are responsible for the final inspection of, repair or supporting the repair of, maintenance, fabrication, removal/replacement of steel structures (bridges) and the training/mentoring of employees. Also the planning and directing of bridge projects to ensure the overall safety of the crew and the public, completing the projects in a timely fashion and within budget.
Qualifications and Experience
High School completion and a 2 year Engineering Technology course along with 5 years of related experience with structural repairs; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
Frequent travel throughout your assigned area is a component of this position; as such, you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle.
As the ideal candidate, you:
are a self-motivated individual who works well independently with minimal supervision;
currently have, or previously held, Four position S Classification to CSA Standard W47.1 Standard Welding Certification;
have a certified Welding Supervisor qualification registered with the Canadian Welding Bureau of Canada;
participate fully as an effective team player;
are experienced with current AutoCADâ„¢ software packages designed for use in a surveying or engineering environment;
are familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations, and safe working practices; and
have experience in the use of spreadsheet software, word processing, and email applications.
Working knowledge of the various aspects of bridge and highway construction design standards, contract specifications, the Land Surveyors Act and familiarity working in a union environment would be considered assets.
You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service. In this position, you will interact with the public, supervise a crew and monitor the work of contract personnel. As such, your ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing, develop strong relationships with clients, and think and act proactively is essential to your success.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one of more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentation, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
The great outdoors will be your worksite. You will have some time spent in an office environment, but most of your time will be spent outside during all seasons and various weather conditions on heavily-travelled roads or in rough, isolated areas of construction sites.
Additional Information
This position may require you to work extended hours / overtime and will involve significant travel throughout the Western District.

Salary Range: $2,178.43 – $2,561.85 Bi-Weekly
