Summary

Training and touring will take place in person (not virtually). Onboarding will take place in Fall 2023. UMMA staff will provide self-guided learning packets for independent study, which is part of your job. You would jump into practice tours quite quickly, with support from UMMA’s Curator for Museum Teaching and Learning, Grace VanderVliet, and other cohort members. We emphasize skills such as: facilitating discussions, encouraging visual literacy, adapting to visitors? needs.

Calendar Expectations:

• In-person training sessions and tours will be held at UMMA on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am-12:30pm. Attendance required. All onboarding and training sessions are compensated.
• Fall Semester: 8 weeks from October – December 2023 * Winter Semester: 12 weeks from January – April 2024
• Approx. two (2) hours per week of additional independent learning
• UMMA follows Ann Arbor Public Schools academic calendar for holidays and breaks.
• This part-time (8-hours per week) position is for one academic year 2023-24, with encouragement to return for the 2024-25 academic year.
• This position is based on a K-12 calendar, so please consider your availability for the time period of this job (October 2023 -> April 2024).

What You’ll Do

With a team of gallery educators, you will develop and deliver interactive visitor-centered tours and lessons based on Museum objects. The audience will be Southeast Michigan K-12 students and teachers, including all third grade classes in Ypsilanti Community Schools. You will welcome visitors, encourage collaborative conversations, and create a student-centered museum experience. You may occasionally learn and tour with current volunteer guides.

Desired Qualifications*

Applicants will thrive who describe themselves as curious and adventurous and who are comfortable with public speaking. Experience with museums and art is beneficial but not required. We seek applicants who are oriented around and experienced with U-M values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Because this position is based on a K-12 calendar, it is difficult to accommodate an undergraduate student schedule.
