Under direct supervision of the Senior Operator in Confined Entry, the Confined Entry Operator performs the following duties:
Prepare to enter confined spaces by reviewing blueprints, engineering plans and section books, confirming required services and setting up job site and equipment (e.g. traffic set-up, tripod, harness, winch and SCBA) for employees entering the confined space.
Work as the Spotter, constantly watching the employee in the confined space, or enter confined space (e.g. manholes and storm pipes), test, monitor and control gas and oxygen levels (e.g. venting), walk around and record conditions.
Install and repair water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructures such as skimming weirs in storm water ducts, repairing manholes (e.g. installing inverts, benching steps and down drops and removing obstructions) and installing flow metering and sampling equipment.
Work with City partners to install, maintain and monitor flow metering and sampling equipment to obtain industrial sampling for lab.
Complete documentation such as Confined Entry Permits, daily journals and records documenting gas readings.
Qualifications
A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) with at least 4 years water/wastewater utility experience.
A valid Class 3 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent) with Q endorsement.
Applicants must successfully complete Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) training.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to use software and desktop or remote devices.
Excellent interpersonal and adaptability skills are required to succeed in this position.
Pre-employment Requirements
Must obtain a City of Calgary operator’s permit
Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
