Role Description
Form Energy is seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to join our dynamic Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) Team. Our GDE Team is a cross-disciplinary group of experts in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Together, we’re responsible for designing, developing, and integrating our cutting-edge discharge cathode technology for Form Energy’s Iron-Air multi-day battery.
As a Senior Materials Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the performance and reliability of the GDE in Form Energy’s product-scale test vehicles and batteries, making significant contributions to the operational success of our Iron-Air Battery as a whole. We are looking for someone who has hands-on experience in materials design and characterization and a proactive, interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. Your work will make a significant and daily impact on a cutting-edge Iron-air battery technology that will hasten the decarbonization of the electric grid and tackle climate change. What You’ll Do:

  • Prioritize safety across all aspects of R&D, from laboratory processes to material handling to electrochemical testing
  • Evaluate the properties, degradation mechanisms, and electrochemical performance of electrode components at the material level
  • Plan, execute, and analyze experiments to evaluate novel materials which durably and reliably enhance the performance of our battery technology
  • Develop and standardize new methods for accelerated testing techniques which detect and measure material property degradation over time
  • Own, perform, and thoroughly document material-focused Failure Analyses to identify opportunities for improvement and recommend corrective actions to colleagues and partner teams
  • Coordinate and perform ex-situ materials characterization (i.e., microscopy, SEM, EDS, ICP, XRD, BET, TGA, DSC, etc) efforts with both internal partner teams and external resources
  • Mentor, guide, and support team members with your expertise and practical experience


What You’ll Bring:

  • 5+ years experience in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, polymer science, or a related field
  • Experience gathering and interpreting data from material characterization techniques (i.e., microscopy, XRD, ICP, SEM, EDS, TGA/DSC)
  • Expertise in characterizing materials to connect their structure and function properties using the aforementioned characterization methods
  • Solid communication skills within a group of peers and the broader organization, including remote team members
  • Creative problem solving and critical thinking capabilities coupled with a high level of attention to detail
  • Hands-on practical experience with electrochemical systems is a plus
  • Experience with experimental design and statistical software such as JMP, Minitab, etc. is a plus
