The Department of Visual Arts at California State University,
Fullerton, invites applications for the position of Chair of the
Department of Visual Arts at the rank of tenured Associate
Professor or Professor, with the appointment to begin in Fall
2023.

The ideal candidate is an artist/scholar who can demonstrate a
successful teaching and leadership record in a university setting
and displays high energy, research/creative excellence, commitment
to inclusion, equity-minded student success, technology,
collaboration, and program development. The successful candidate
will lead the way in defining and implementing a vision for the
Department to enhance its strengths and keep it competitive with
respect to changing academic climate and the challenges confronting
higher education, particularly in the arts. The Department Chair
will seek the advice and recommendations of their colleagues while
conducting departmental affairs collaboratively and democratically.
The Department Chair is typically appointed for a three-year term,
with opportunities for re-appointment based on departmental
election.

Responsibilities

• Administer all aspects of a large Department of Visual Arts in
  a State University, including budgets, record keeping, scheduling,
  operations, assigned time, University Policies, and regulatory
  processes
• Oversee Department and College operations, ensuring quality and
  currency of the curriculum
• Serve as a strong advocate for the Department of Visual Arts
  within the College of the Arts
• Identify and adjust to curricular trends and needs
• Assess the philosophical, pedagogical, socio-cultural, and
  academic impact of the adoption of ideas related to program
  development and enrollment
• Work with the Dean and other College of the Arts Department
  Chairs to support all aspects of the Visual Arts
  Department
• Serve as an advocate for the Department of Visual Arts to the
  administration, as well as to the University, arts community, and
  the public at large
• Oversee all aspects of student recruitment and maintenance of a
  strong student body
• Oversee the evaluation of full-time and lecturer faculty and
  work with the Department Personnel Committee (DPC)
• Interact with the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, and the
  Registrar (and other academic support units as necessary) regarding
  student applications, admissions, retention, and timely
  graduation
• Administer all aspects of the Department’s scholarship funds
  and awards, as well as Non-Resident Tuition Fee Waivers (NRTFW),
  with the consultation and advice of visual arts faculty
• Serve as a strong advocate in fundraising for the Department’s
  scholarship endowments and other financial needs
• Recruit and support a diverse faculty and staff
• Organize and oversee the student advising process
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity; the ability to
  work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies
  within CSUF’s diverse communities, internally and externally

  Required Qualifications

• Master of Fine Arts or Ph.D. in an art-related field including,
  but not limited to fine arts, visual arts, design, art history, and
  art education
• Minimum of 7 years of teaching experience in an art-related
  discipline
• Demonstrated excellence in academic leadership and
  administration in the visual arts, design, art history, and art
  education
• Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate
  teaching, especially with students from underrepresented social and
  ethnic groups
• Strong record of service in an academic setting
• Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and collaboratively
  with department colleagues in an equitable team
  environment
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills

  Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of and understanding of a large comprehensive public
  university’s policies and procedures
• Sustained record of significant professional achievement (i.e.,
  regional, national, or international exhibitions; peer-reviewed
  publications, etc.)
• Departmental and Programmatic Chair experience
• Experience working collaboratively with on-campus and community
  organizations
• Experience working with the National Association of Schools of
  Art and Design accreditation process
• Experience managing a large administrative and technical staff,
  preferably at a Public University
• Experience working within a collective bargaining
  environment

  The Department of
  Visual Arts serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate art majors and
  60 graduate students, with 36 full-time and 80+ lecturer faculty.
  The Department offers both a BA in Art and a BFA with 13 areas of
  concentration, in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with nine areas
  of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los
  Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and presents a full range of
  fine arts and professional programs, including a nationally
  recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the
  Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000 sq. ft. graduate
  studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from
  campus. The Department of Visual Arts at California State

  Salary is commensurate with experience and
  qualifications and is subject to budgetary authorization and any
  California State University System faculty contract increases.
