The Opportunity:
STACK (the System for Teaching and Assessment using a Computer algebra Kernel) is an online assessment package for mathematics. STACK is the world-leading open-source automatic assessment system for mathematics and STEM. It is available for Moodle, ILIAS and as an integration into other systems through LTI. This open-source system allows users to build sophisticated assessments for STEM which challenge students and which provides feedback to help them improve their performance and understanding. The Teaching Software Engineer is a key role for the maintenance, further development and promotion of STACK. A significant part of the post will involve writing code for STACK. This will include actively working with the PHP code to help maintain and further develop the STACK online assessment system. The post holder will also work with the other STACK developers (currently at UoE, the UK Open University, and Aalto Finland) to ensure the code keeps pace with changes in PHP/Moodle/Maxima release versions.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- You will have an Honours degree in a STEM discipline, ideally mathematics or computer science.
- An ability to programme to a high standard in PHP and Javascript is essential, as it the ability to contribute to medium and large scale projects as part of a team.
- You should also have a working knowledge of best practice in software engineering, including version control and unit testing, and a working knowledge of typesetting online, e.g. in HTML, CSS, and basic LaTeX.
