Job Summary/Basic Function
The Academic Specialist provides a range of academic supports to
TRIO Student Support Service ( SSS ) participants that enable
students to achieve success. This position co-manages academic
supports for Bay College students, which includes recruiting,
hiring, training, supervision, and mentoring tutors and TRIO
participants, diagnosing and prescribing for student needs, and
providing individualized tutoring to TRIO students. This position
also collects and analyzes data to evaluate effectiveness of
academic support provided and inform decision making.
Minimum Qualifications
• A Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field or related field.
• Two years of STEM related work experience.
• Experience facilitating individual and group tutoring
sessions.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, manage and support
tutors.
• Interpersonal skills to effectively work with students, staff,
faculty, administrators, and partners.
• Knowledge of developmental math, mathematical processes and
current methods of mathematics pedagogy.
• Ability to assist faculty in working with students with atypical
learning styles and academic support needs.
• Skilled in use of technology for student engagement, data entry,
data analysis and reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics.
• Master’s degree in a STEM or STEM education related field.
• Teaching experience.
• Experience in the preparation and facilitation of workshops about
math and science anxiety, math and science study skills, and other
student success topics.
• Experience administering and providing tutoring and developmental
educational services.
• Experience with educational computing technology.
• Experience with barriers to postsecondary success similar to
those of the program participants including students with
disabilities, first generation and low income students.

Work Schedule
Typical hours are 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with an hour lunch
break. Occasional evening and weekend hours for TRIO events, trips
and/or training.

Works under the general supervision of the Director of TRIO SSS

May require occasional travel to West Campus to support TRIO
participants; and to other locations for TRIO events and/or

Assess student academic needs and provide range of customized
academic supports to all TRIO participants.
Job Duty
Coordinate and provide individualized and group
mathematics/sciences tutoring sessions (range: basic skills,
differential equations, linear algebra) to TRIO participants.
Connect students to tutoring services for other subject
areas.

Regularly meet with faculty to determine academic needs of TRIO
participants, discuss student progress, co-design solutions and
implement interventions.

Collaborate with TRIO team to provide advising support as well as
other TRIO SSS grant services to TRIO participants (transfer,
financial literacy, cultural experiences, career exploration, etc).
Participate in TRIO events and program activities.

Promote the TRIO SSS program and services to students, faculty,
staff and administration. Assist with program outreach
efforts.

Provide support for grant data collection and analysis including
provision of normative and summative math, science and general
education tutoring data analysis for documentation and reporting.
Develop statistical and narrative reports regarding the success of
the tutoring program. Conduct student pre- and post- semester
comparative studies to determine effectiveness of tutoring
services.

Work with staff to develop and propose yearly goals, strategies and
tactics to enhance outcomes for TRIO program objectives through
analysis of incoming students and returning student metrics.

Build supportive and collegiate relationships with Bay College
students, staff, faculty and administrators. Attend and participate
in Division meetings.

Set goals and objectives for self, tutors and TRIO participants
that align with Bay College’s strategic agenda and TRIO SSS
Grant.

Work with the Office of Accessibility to provide services and
resources to meet student needs.
Job Duty
Recruit, hire, train, schedule, coordinate, approve timecards and
evaluate all subject area tutors.
Job Duty
Provide consistent training to tutors in teaching methods, learning
styles and subject specific theory so they can effectively assist
students of all skill levels in their courses.
Job Duty
Interact with faculty to ensure complete and consistent coverage of
all topics and teaching methods used in Bay College
classrooms.
Job Duty
Serve as a resource for faculty and staff regarding
mathematical/sciences, academic supports, tutoring methods and TRIO
program elements.
Job Duty
Prepare and present workshops on math anxiety, math study skills,
and other academic support topics.
Job Duty
Remain current in the field of academic support strategies and
methods to ensure students receive effective assistance.
