Salary: £32,348 to £34,308 with progression to £42,155 per annum

The Role

The Faculty of Medical Sciences is committed to developing the research leaders of the future and we are looking to appoint two post-doctoral Faculty Fellows working in any area that aligns closely with one of our Faculty Research Themes .

Our Faculty Fellowships are designed for early career researchers who have an excellent track record for their career stage and have the ambition to develop an original research idea and secure external fellowship funding.

This is a two-year fellowship (with the possibility of an extension to three years, based on performance), that places you in one of our stimulating Research Institutes and offers you:

• Dedicated mentoring from experienced researchers
• Training opportunities to support your early success in obtaining an externally funded fellowship
• Financial support of upto £10K to produce pilot data for fellowship applications
• Peer support from a cross-disciplinary cohort of talented early career researchers
• Modern specialist research facilities.

Outline of your plan to secure an external Fellowship

You should include an outline of your plan to win an external fellowship (or equivalent), including the topic, a brief project plan for developing your proposal (including acquisition of pilot data and internal peer review of your proposal), with indicative costings, and an explanation of how your area of work will fit with our Faculty Research Themes.

Your plan should be three pages maximum and cover an initial fellowship period of two years. You should include details of the intended external fellowship schemes you will be applying for, with timescales and confirmation of eligibility.

Research Role Profile

As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles . These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level. The responsibilities of the Faculty Fellowship are set out in the context of the Role Profile “Research Associate – Level F” on page 6 of the document.

Those elements of the role that concern teaching students, supervising undergraduate research projects, supervising postgraduate research students and making contributions to grant applications led by others, are not expected, although some supervision of student projects will be encouraged.

Key Accountabilities

• Develop an area of research and personal expertise, in collaboration with senior staff, that will start to develop your independent research career, aligned to an existing research group and within the Faculty’s key research themes.
• Maintain and build on an excellent publication record.
• Obtain preliminary data or background information to support a successful application for an externally funded fellowship.
• Develop and submit a fellowship application, making use of the internal application review systems and utilising the help of specialised support staff and mentors
• To further develop internal and external collaborations in support of your research theme and, where appropriate, to contribute to local research group meetings.
• To plan and keep under review an appropriate career path in partnership with a designated mentor and fully participate in the University’s Performance and Development Review process, including determining training needs
• To undertake staff development training courses where appropriate for career development. This includes sessions on fellowship application guidance and leadership development
• To monitor and manage any monies associated with this fellowship
• Develop research links with a research team in at least one external institution by the end of the fellowship period

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Expertise in a specific research area that can lead to the development of own research area
• An excellent publication record, appropriate to career stage and specialism
• An ability to formulate and articulate a research plan suitable for development into an externally funded fellowship
• Demonstrable experience of relevant, advanced research methods, tools and techniques appropriate to the research theme
• Awareness of ethical issues involved in their area of research
• Ability to assess and evaluate concepts/theories and develop original solutions
• High level analytical and problem solving capability
• Ability to communicate complex information with clarity
• Good organisation skills
• Ability to work independently
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Experience of, or research links with, a research group outside Newcastle (or a clear plan for how this will be achieved within the fellowship, if applicant is internal to Newcastle)

Desirable

• Experience of presentation of work at conferences, meetings or poster events
• Evidence of project management experience
• Experience of designing and delivering research projects
