Position Summary
The Material Handler II position is responsible for unloading,
receiving, storing, loading, and distributing freight/small package
shipments, as well as sorting and delivering United States Postal
Service mail and college interoffice communications. This role
often requires operating a motor vehicle as a courier between the
college’s regional learning centers, as well as other delivery
vehicles and forklift trucks on main campus. This position may also
operate automated systems with barcode scanners, as well as mail
stuffing and metering equipment. The Material Handler II should
have clear, concise communication and customer service skills and
must maintain a clean, neat and professional appearance at all
times.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operational Support
Provides general guidance and direction on routine day-to-day work
activities.
Material Handling
Loads and unloads trucks. Checks in shipments to ensure accuracy.
Notes any damaged items, as directed. Completes all
responsibilities to process deliveries, as directed. Prepares and
boxes items for shipping. Operates fork lift, pallet jack and other
material handling equipment to move and store items. Sorts incoming
and outgoing mail for distribution. Uses hand or mail handling
machines to time stamp, open, read, sort, route, and digitize
incoming mail; and to address, seal, stamp, fold, stuff and affix
postage to outgoing mail or packages. Delivers U.S. and interoffice
mail, UPS/FedEx packages, and expendable supplies to main campus
offices. May operate motor vehicles while acting as inter-campus
courier delivering interoffice mail, UPS/FedEx packages, and
expendable supplies to regional learning center campuses.
Administrative & Facilities
Maintains shipping and receiving documentation, as directed.
Maintains responsibility for keeping shipping and receiving area,
warehouse, and general merchandise areas clean and organized.

Other Duties & Responsibilities
Attends all required department meetings and training. Acquires
and/or maintains Forklift Operator Certification within 90 days of
assignment.
Usual Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly
sits, and occasionally stands and walks. The employee regularly
uses hands to handle and feel and occasionally reaches with hands
or arms, climbs or balances, stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls.
The employee regularly converses verbally with others in person.
The employee occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds when lifting mail,
printed materials and supplies.
Working Conditions
Normal working conditions typical of a mail room, with frequent
exposure to dirt, dust and debris. Occasional exposure to inclement
weather such as cold, hot, humid, and wet conditions. Occasional
exposure to minor cuts, burns, or other incapacitating injury,
fumes or airborne particles. Employee regularly works near moving
parts. Employee is occasionally exposed to road conditions when
picking up and delivery mail.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of : general warehousing practices; safety
practices related to material moving and storage.
Skill in : operating a forklift and other material handling
equipment; completing forms; maintaining basic work records.
Ability to : understand and follow general instructions;
work independently demonstrating initiative; develop and maintain
effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job
contacts and general public; perform light manual labor for
extended periods of time; maintain accurate and complete work
records; maintain confidential and sensitive information; excellent
listening skills; develop and maintain effective working
relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the College;
effectively work with persons of varying cultures and diversity;
provide general direction and guidance to others in performance of
day-to-day work activities.
Minimum Qualifications :
High School Diploma or GED. State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s). An
appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and
experience may qualify a candidate.
Preferred Qualifications :
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in shipping
and receiving or closely related field, to include experience with
a dock truck/warehouse related material handling equipment.
Licenses and Certifications :
The selected candidate will be required to successfully obtain CSCC
certification on the required equipment within 90 days of
assignment.
