JOB DESCRIPTION – Education & Public Engagement Co-Ordinator
General Description of Role
Education and public support is fundamental to everything we do and this role will influence our visitors, local and international community in a positive way to educate about all British Marine life and how to protect it.
We believe that through engagement and education we can change people’s habits and attitudes and promote sustainability and conservation on a wider scale both locally and globally.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for the marine environment and for influencing, engaging and educating the public of all ages through hands-on activities to fill the role of Education & Public Engagement Co-Ordinator and raise the profile of our sustainability and conservation work.
The individual will ideally be a Welsh speaker with a background in public engagement or education and with at least a basic knowledge or interest in marine life and marine biology. This will be a full-time permanent role and 30% of the work time (on an annual basis) will be spent in the aquarium working directly with the animals or husbandry work. This time in the aquarium is likely to be more weighted in the winter months while the outreach events and activities dominate the busier school holidays and summer.
Core responsibilities:
In consultation with the aquarium team, you will deliver a range of educational activities that meet the needs of our wide audience of visitors.
As part of your role, you will be expected to plan and deliver our education packages both on and off-site at outreach events.
Working with NGOs and other collaborative organisations to influence through campaigns, events and activities
To provide regular bilingual social media posts (at least twice weekly) to share our ongoing engagement activities and to influence our visitors and wider audience.
You will further develop our existing education program, documents, worksheets and outreach activities to ensure that they are always up-to-date.
Develop educational resources to support the aquarium exhibits as and when required.
You will take overall responsibility for the coordination of group bookings, with guidance from the Site and Operations Manager, Curator, Senior Aquarist and Director, to ensure that our education packages are delivered to a high standard and to ensure maximum footfall from educational institutions.
Implementing and managing our ‘Young Aquarist’ scheme.
To carry out regular beach cleans and surveys in collaboration with Marine Conservation Society and Keep Wales Tidy over data collection and sharing the results.
To run and manage our voluntary Tal-Y-Foel Beach Clean Group – carrying out 4 beach surveys per year (one each season) and at least 4 other organised community beach clean events.
To collaborate with the ASE and STEM and the BIAZA educational working group to deliver up-to-date topical educational sessions and programmes
To assist with husbandry and animal work in the aquarium as and when needed, under the direction of the Curator and senior aquarist, especially during the winter, with this taking around 30% of the total working hours on an average annual basis.
Additional responsibilities:
Assist the aquarium team with day-to-day animal husbandry to further your understanding of the animals that we care for, their conservation and their needs.
You will also assist in the development of all the educational aspects of our exhibits to maximise visitor experience.
It is expected that you are flexible in your duties to work with other departments as required by the business. This may require covering breaks, or helping other departments through peak trading times.
Qualifications and skills:
A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant subject – this can be a PGCE or educational qualification.
A qualification in Marine Biology or Biological Sciences is not essential but a deep interest in biology, conservation and the ability to learn and to enthuse others on marine life and wildlife subjects is essential.
Ability to speak Welsh is essential, a basic level beyond beginner is acceptable.
Excellent communication and motivational skills.
Experience of working with groups of various ages and backgrounds.
Understanding of standard office IT software.
Ability to work as a team and to manage a small team, but also working independently.
Enthusiastic, positive and approachable personality.
Full clean driver’s licence and access to transport essential
Experience in organising group or public events or workshops is highly desirable.
Work will be on a scheduled monthly basis to provide sufficient cover in line with the needs of the business.
Due to the nature of the business, successful applicants will need to be available to work weekends, public and bank holidays and during school holidays.
In line with the requirements of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996, all applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK. As part of the recruitment process, you will be asked to provide documented evidence of eligibility.
