Position Summary

A rare opportunity exists for an epidemiologist to join the Western Public Health Unit.

The Western Public Health Unit (WPHU) has been established to strengthen the public health response to infectious diseases and other health issues in the Western metropolitan region of Melbourne. The Unit is part of a system of three metropolitan Public Health Units; WPHU, North-eastern (NEPHU), South-eastern (SEPHU) and six regional Public Health Units to provide a new state-wide system of public health delivery and oversight. Initially responsible for Covid-related public health control activities, WPHU is taking on increasing responsibility for other communicable disease and health promotion activities, as part of the State’s overall public health response.

The Epidemiologist is a member of the Data, Epidemiology and Surveillance (DES) team and undertakes epidemiological surveillance and analysis of data across both health protection (including Covid-19 and other communicable diseases) and health promotion. The role reports to the Lead Epidemiologist, will work closely with other Epidemiologists and Data Analysts, and may involve some supervision of activities undertaken by Data Analysts and Data Assurance Officers.

To be appointed to this role you must:

• Have a relevant tertiary qualification in epidemiology or related field, or applied experience in a similar role
• Have experience synthesising and analysing complex data from a variety of sources using statistical and data visualisation software such as R and Power BI
• Design, plan, undertake and report epidemiological analyses of relevant datasets to improve understanding of Covid-19, other communicable diseases, and other health conditions, during a dynamic time in which the unit expands beyond COVID-19 public health control to other communicable diseases and health promotion
• Utilise your excellent written and oral communication skills to understand the reporting and disease surveillance needs of WPHU, translate requests into reports that meet these needs, and communicate findings in a manner appropriate to the audience
• Have excellent data management and problem-solving skills, a strong eye for detail, and the ability to apply your analytical and critical thinking skills under pressure.

Part time temporary position until 30 June 2023.

Remuneration: HS6 rate plus superannuation and salary packaging tax benefits.
