Job Description

The purpose of our Employee Relations (ER) team is to ensure fair and respectful engagement in all aspects of the employee experience at Shopify, consistent with our mission, values and rules of engagement. The ER team’s work lives at the intersection of a high-performance environment and a workplace culture that prioritizes engagement, diversity and belonging. In this role, you will work to build the highest level of trust and integrity between Shopify and its employees, ensuring that Shopifolk can focus on helping our merchants, partners and buyers succeed.
We’re looking for someone who thrives in the face of challenges, loves solving complex problems and is excited to leverage their excellent communication skills. This work will include ER issues that are urgent and time-sensitive. The ability to work autonomously, balancing priorities between projects and managing crisis-responses with compassion will be a critical component of success.
In this role you will:
Support the build of the ER function with relevant processes and tools, including intake, management and reporting systems
Investigate highly sensitive HR and ER issues: conducting complainant, witness and subject employee interviews; analysing data from various internal systems; case adjudication; proposing remedial action based on investigation findings
Independently manage assigned casework [eg. investigations, grievances, appeals], bringing them to a closure in a thorough and timely manner
Provide guidance to leaders on how to create an environment that breeds a humane, compassionate approach to employee issues
Design and implement policies that create consistent and efficient Talent processes related to ER, while maintaining space for leaders to exercise judgement
Conduct formal investigations related to the Code of Conduct and the legal and regulatory frameworks in which Shopify operates
Ensure requisite documentation of all inquiries and investigations are reported to Talent Leadership and Shopify’s Executive team
Partner with Shopify’s Talent Business Partners, Legal, Employee Experience, Diversity and Belonging, Coaching, and Learning teams to inform leadership training and curricula development
Support Shopify Leadership in the EMEA region to up-skill and maintain a high standard of fair and consistent employee practices
Help design and implement policies to create consistent and efficient Talent processes related to ER, while maintaining scope for leaders to exercise judgement
Maintain knowledge of the evolving legal and regulatory environment and relevant legislation relating to ER work within the key EMEA countries in which we operate.
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years’ experience working hands-on as an ER Specialist or as a HR Business Partner with hands-on experience of the Employee Relations field, including investigative fieldwork
Experience leading and coaching on the investigation and disciplinary process requirements in Ireland and or UK.
Passion for employee relations, investigations, and labour/employment law
Ability to build high trust and impactful relationships with employees and leaders
Working knowledge of relevant legal and regulatory norms in Ireland
Strong business acumen and the ability to apply it to ER issues
A mindset of continuous improvement and ability to coach others on how to improve our approach to ER
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesise and communicate outcomes of sensitive topics to employees and Executive Leaders
A collaborative approach that results in optimal outcomes on complex topics
Excellent facilitation skills with hands-on experience in workplace mediation
Preferred Qualifications:
EMEA qualifications in Employment Law and related disciplines
Knowledge and hands-on working experience of ER and employment law in any other EMEA country in which we operate [United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Spain, France, Netherlands, Lithuania, Poland or Israel].
Previous experience working in a full 100% remote/work from home environment
