School Coach (Full time, 10 months/year)
Teaching Matters is a national nonprofit organization, headquartered in New York City, with the mission to close the opportunity gap of a radically unequal education system for underserved and historically marginalized children. From states and districts to schools and classrooms, we partner to help teachers and school leaders develop the skills they need to teach well, lead their peers and drive school-wide improvement.
We currently seek exceptional educational consultants to support transformative instructional improvements in public schools across NYC. Teaching Matters has been at the front lines with our partners by supporting teachers and leaders to develop the competencies and skills critical to create culturally responsive, engaging learning experiences for all students. This is an opportunity for the right candidate to join our team in coaching and related professional development sessions related to K-8 Inquiry Project to be piloted in the 2022-24 school years. The project is grant-funded and the work period is from September through June, 2023, with the potential for renewal depending on approval by NYCDOE. Travel to NYC schools a minimum of 5 days a week (and associated boroughs) is required for this role. Must have the ability to work a range of shifts based on schools and organizational needs.
The primary role of the coach will be to:
Provide onsite coaching up to 4 days/week for school librarians and teacher in the implementation of inquiry projects and/or capstone projects, including planning, pedagogy, and evaluation with a focus on information fluency, digital fluency, and culturally responsive-sustaining education practices
Collaborate with school administrators and teams
Support school team in data analysis
Support schools in planning and hosting/attending Inquiry Celebrations
Collaborate with Inquiry Project content developers
Attend weekly team meetings
Key Qualifications:
Minimum of 4 years experience in coaching and/or minimum of 4 years of teaching in elementary school
Strong content awareness with a lens to culturally responsive curriculum, inclusive practices and pedagogy emphasizing Universal Design for Learning
Ability to work independently and collaboratively on deadline
Demonstrated commitment to one’s own professional growth
Demonstrated understanding and adherence to the principles of Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education
Experience with project-based learning and backwards planning (UbD)
Experience facilitating teacher teams / groups to achieve student outcomes
Experience in urban schools
Exemplar skills in technology, including Zoom, Google Suite, and other online collaboration tools
Strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills, well organized, excellent writing and communication skills
Superior interpersonal skills to collaborate on large-scale project design and facilitation
Commitment to Teaching Matters’ mission, vision, and core values
In addition to the requirements above, we are prioritizing educational consultants with expertise in one or more of these areas:
Supporting educators/students implementing Capstone or similar projects
Supporting students acquiring English or multilingual learners
Supporting students with special needs based on an understanding of and experience with students with disabilities and special education programs
Collaborating with librarians and/or otherwise working with school library services.
Coaching teachers/librarians in lesson planning and instruction
Coaching school administrators in project planning

10 months schedule approximating a public school year calendar (with summers off) with a Salary range: $85,000-90,000 per year, based on experience.
