Your opportunity:
The Data Sciences Institute (DSI) is a highly specialized research initiative at the University of Toronto that draws on world-class research expertise across multiple academic divisions, affiliated hospitals, regional, national, and international academic partners, and commercial organizations. The mission of the DSI is to provide the leadership and capacity to catalyze the transformative nature of data sciences across disciplines, in fair and ethical ways, leveraging and strengthening U of T’s pre-eminence in data sciences to solve society’s complex and pressing problems. The initiative will draw upon these strengths to support social change by linking data resources to investigate the impact of data -driven approaches on inequity, as well as combat misinformation and foster trust in data-informed research by driving reproducible and reliable research. It will promote the flow of methodological advancements such as data management, computing, data integration, novel statistical methodology, visualization methods and will facilitate the training of new generations of interdisciplinary trainees. DSI will unify and galvanize the core strengths of Toronto’s data science community building capacity for data and computational-based projects and training by being the focal point for the coordination of data science activities and partnerships to further elevate UofT’s global stature.
Reporting to the Director, DSI Operations and Strategy the incumbent will be responsible for providing software development and analysis services for the unit and various projects, involving multiple research groups at academic and industry sites internationally. The Senior Software Developer will be responsible for design, implementation, operation and maintenance of data structures, data analysis and reporting, project design and management, graphical user interfaces, algorithms, and technical documentation.
Your responsibilities will include:
Analyzing, recommending, and designing highly complex software architecture
Developing and overseeing new system elements
Writing complex technical code
Evaluating programming code to ensure it has validity, compatibility, and that it meets appropriate standards
Commenting on programming code for the purposes of standardization and consistency
Analyzing, recommending and designing technical solutions for highly complex IT problems
Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in computer or data science or a related field, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience. Masters degree computer or data science preferred.
Minimum five (5) years’ experience with programming in using open-source programming libraries and databases including graphical user interface (GUI) design and other modern technologies.
Experience working with both academic and industry partners on research programs.
Experience in project management with demonstrated ability to self-prioritize in a fast-paced environment with varying project timelines.
Experience writing technical documents and delivering presentations.
Experience using and workingwith R and Python programming.
Experience with group software development.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience implementing good software engineering practices.
Experience with data analysis.
Excellent problem solving skills and analytical ability.
Advanced presentation and communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
Expert level R and Python programming.
Expert level software engineering practices.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 16 – $89,529 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $114,493. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
