The University of Southampton is currently undertaking a transformation of its primary web presence. To support this, and the continued maintenance and development of our other varied platforms, we are delighted to be expanding our current web development team.

iSolutions is one of the largest departments within the University’s Professional Services group, providing computing facilities, data communications and telephone services in support of all University activities, including learning and teaching, research, and University administration.

About the role:

We are looking for a Software Engineer who will show their initiative and resourcefulness as part of a small team to modernise and improve our online presence. This is an exciting time to join the team as we are about undertake a wide range of upgrades and changes to improve our web estate.

This role will report directly to the Communication Platforms Team manager.

What you will do:

• Work across the full stack as part of a small team developing the newest iteration of our website
• Develop, maintain, and improve the other varied components and systems which make up our web estate to ensure we continue to have a solid web presence
• Liaise with the Communication Platforms Senior Software Engineer to define and understand the work required and then work collaboratively with teams across the whole organisation to understand user requirements and help shape these into solutions
• Work with other teams around iSolutions on integrating data and making our web presence more data driven
• Develop code and systems to a high-quality including documentation and automated tests.
• Work to improve the international availability and performance of our website
• Share your ideas for ways to improve and continue to extract more value from our web estate

What you will bring

• Experience in developing applications in PHP 7+, modern HTML, JS, CSS
• Evidence of maintaining and developing for a large Drupal instance
• Experience with PHP and JavaScript build and testing frameworks
• Developing to WCAG 2.1 AA and an understanding of its importance
• It would be beneficial if you had experience of working in a CI environment, as would working with APIs and ingesting data automatically into Drupal
• Maintaining WordPress or other CMS would be desirable, as would knowledge of other programming languages
