In line with the government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the new Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England. These roles are funded by NHS England.
The successful candidates will be employed by Barnet Integrated Clinical Services (BICS) and based in education settings in either the west locality of London Borough of Barnet (post codes HA8, NW9 and NW7) or East/Central and South localities. The starting salary exceeds the NHS Agenda for Change Band 5 with outer London Higher Cost Allowance.
To enable this, applicants must have completed / expecting to complete the postgraduate diploma for Educational Mental Health Practitioners prior to starting this role. Our objective is for the successful candidates to be in post latest by January 2022. Please note that two of these posts will be offered on a permanent basis, while the other is offered on one-year fixed-term basis (with likelihood to roll over to a permanent contract after nine months).
EMHPs play a key role as members of Mental Health Support Teams, which have the responsibility for delivering schools’ overarching approach to providing mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people. Green Paper for Transforming children and young people’s mental health.
As part of this role, there will be a requirement to travel between education settings and occasionally also to/from the office where the team base is located.

Barnet Integrated Clinical Services (BICS) offer social, emotional, behavioural and mild-to-moderate mental health support to children, young people and families within Barnet. Our clinicians within Social Care offer an in-house clinical service to children and young people known to the wider Barnet Family Service. We see children, young people and families in schools and in the community.
We are made up of low-intensity clinicians working in schools (education wellbeing practitioners) and low intensity clinicians working in the community (children wellbeing practitioners) who see children, young people presenting with mild mental health needs.
We also have high-intensity primary mental health workers based in the Primary Mental Health Team working with children, young people and families with moderate mental health needs. Additionally, we have high-intensity clinicians working within Children’s Social Care.
We work within a stepped care model of delivering a range of therapeutic interventions working closely with NHS specialist CAMHS and Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector. We also provide consultations, training and workshop with our colleagues within schools, Early Help Hubs, Social Care, GP surgeries and voluntary sector.
