Position Summary

The Evening ESOL Teacher provides ESOL SPL1 and SPL2. In-person and/or remote classes in the evenings to build up English language skills through contextualized learning in career pathways and self-advocacy. The Teacher will be teaching 2 levels (1&2 or 3&4). Teaching 4 days, dedicating 2 days to each level. The current evening class runs from 6pm-8pm EDT, prep time is included.

Agency and Program Background

Project Hope Boston works in partnership with families so they can move up and out of poverty. We do this by being a catalyst for change in the lives of families and in the systems that keep them poor; developing and providing family support solutions for homelessness and poverty; and advocating for just public policies that strengthen families.

Located in Boston’s Dudley Street neighborhood, Project Hope is at the forefront of efforts in the city to move families beyond homelessness and poverty. It was founded in 1981 by the Little Sisters of the Assumption who first settled in the Dudley area in 1947 to live and work with the neighborhood families. In the 1980s when family homelessness became a crisis in Boston and the state, the Sisters opened their doors and welcomed families to stay with them, and Project Hope was launched. Once best known as a family shelter, today Project Hope offers an array of services to assist families – especially low-income single mothers – in gaining the resources and skills to overcome their impoverished circumstances.

In 2006, Project Hope opened an attractive Community Building on Dudley Street – the first LEED Silver certified, earth-friendly building in Roxbury – to serve as its headquarters and a neighborhood center for job training, adult education, housing counseling, community empowerment, and more. DSNI/DNI are now located in the Project Hope building on Dudley Street. Just a few blocks away, the original site remains home to the family shelter.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre assessments to assign the right level class for students and post assessments to monitor progress in English language skills

• From the course curriculum, develop contextualized (e.g. job and career readiness) and differentiated lesson plans

• Collaborate with daytime ESOL teachers and attend Education meetings

• Streamline and integrate new ESOL student enrollments including one-on-one intake and group Orientation

• Teach from a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and strength-based perspective

• Develop a class evaluation that promotes student feedback used to develop best practice strategies and continuous improvement plan

• Respond adequately to class culture and dynamics to ensure a safe learning environment for all students

• Provide internal referrals and recommendations for SPL3 and SPL4

• Provide quarterly data reports of progress, data points, and hours of attendance.

Education Requirements :

• Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s preferred

• Best Plus certified or Class-E writing or reading certified – preferred

• TESOL certified- desired

• experience teaching ESOL -required.
