What is our Degree Apprenticeship all about?

We work in a fast-moving market with new applications emerging all the time, so we’re looking for bright, innovative and passionate people to research and develop innovative software solutions to prove out the viability of new technology. The Software Degree Apprentice will be part of a specialist team on new technology for products such as smart connected devices, edge computing and cloud-based solutions and sensors.

You could be working in our labs developing new concepts and innovations for our customers, or researching new breakthrough technologies for our vacuum solutions. It’s an amazing insight into life inside an organisation that is growing and developing at an incredible rate. The four-year degree programme is an exciting development opportunity where you will spent 1-2 days a week at University during term time, with the rest of the time learning ‘on the job’ at our Global Technology Centre where you can put the theory you have learnt in an academic environment into a practical application in the workplace.

If the traditional University route is not for you, our Degree Apprenticeship combines the benefits of gaining an academic degree with four years of paid, on-the-job work experience – so you really are getting the best of both worlds! You’ll have regular progress reviews which will give you invaluable developmental feedback from your line manager, programme manager and the University.

Where would I work?

You will be based in our Global Technology Centre in Burgess Hill, Sussex, a short drive away from the vibrant seaside city of Brighton and Hove. Some visits to other Atlas Copco sites in the UK may be required occasionally.

As part of our team, you will:

• Develop software for our research and development projects, both individually and as part of a team
• Research and learn about new software technologies and assess their usefulness in improving our future products
• Write project proposals describing the purpose, and reports, describing the outcome.
• Participate in various project, team meetings and wider group meetings.
• Be involved in testing software solutions on both real hardware and simulators.
• Growing skills and experience in a technical environment enabling you to gain valuable business knowledge.
• Learning vacuum and abatement science and understanding our customers applications.
• Take ownership and responsibility for your own learning and development.
• Be actively involved in the Early Careers community; you will also support the promotional activities for our Early Careers programmes.

About you
Education
You will have, or be predicted:

• 3 A levels at Grade C or above, including Maths or at least one Science subject, or
• BTEC Level 3 Vocational Qualification in a related subject e.g. Computer Science, Electronics or similar, or
• Level 3 Apprenticeship in Engineering, IT, or another relevant subject.

Your skills, knowledge, and behaviours

• Basic software programming skills in a language such as Python, Java, C++, C# or C
• A good understanding of computer architecture, e.g. memory, processors, operating systems, interfaces
• A curious attitude and keen to learn about technology and acquire new skills
• Able to work individually as well as in a team with both technical and non-technical people
• An analytical mind and are good at solving technical problems using a range of different methods
• A good understanding of the different stages of the software development lifecycle
• Proficient in using Microsoft Office tools, e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Good communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a specialist team.
• Ability to apply technical knowledge to analyse problems and develop innovative solutions.
