Full-Time, Open Ended, 35 Hours Per Week
We are looking for a Lead Student Support Officer (LSSO), a key position in the Student Support team in the School of Economics. The post holder will be responsible for reviewing, administering and delivering the services and systems that support our Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate Taught (PGT) student community.
The Opportunity:
The post holder will ensure that strong student support is provided in line with the University and CAHSS aim of enhancing the student experience. The postholder will work to both implement and coordinate the service and subsequently develop the administrative and support mechanisms within the School relating to student support. The post holder will be the line manager of the School’s two Student Support Officers, and will be a leading member of the Student Review Team to coordinate support for students of concern within the School and manage the allocation of cases among the Student Support team.
The post will be directly line managed by the Teaching and Student Services Manager and also work closely with the Manager of Student Welfare to ensure good systems are in place for pastoral care, and the integration of student support with student welfare and experience. The post holder will also work very closely with the UG and PG team managers, and the Senior Personal Tutor and Personal Tutors (PTs) for UG and PGT regarding day-to-day issues and communication.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- Good standard of education and several years’ experience in a relevant administrative/junior management role with an understanding of the higher education context, OR hold a relevant degree and have a minimum of 2-3 years’ relevant experience in a student support role.
- Excellent, proven interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience of working/responding independently and dealing with unforeseen problems and circumstances.
- Work as part of a team, to enable and motivate staff, to facilitate, influence and negotiate.
- Knowledge and understanding of university academic policies, regulations and codes of practice, plus appreciation of wider University and HE issues.

Today, the School of Economics includes 38 academic staff and a team of 20 administrative and technical support staff, as well as visiting Professors and other associates. The academic staff include eleven professors, six senior lecturers, three senior teaching fellows, fourteen lecturers, one reader, and one teaching fellow.
The School is characterised by its cohesiveness and informal research-led collegiality, with high quality research seminars and workshop programmes running on a weekly basis. The School has special research strength in economic theory, labour economics and applied econometrics in addition to an array of more dispersed expertise. In the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), the School of Economics was placed 1st in Scotland and 8th in the UK by overall rating. In terms of the proportion of publications that are classified as world-leading, the School is ranked 1st in Scotland and 7th in the UK.
