Job Description:
Assist in planning, provisioning, and documenting customer orders from simple to complex involving telecom services such as fibre cable, media converters, router and switch technology, IP networking assignments, Fibre Channel, BaaS and SDWAN.
Assist in the development of engineering designs, risk assessment and schedules pertaining to Telecom customer projects implementations.
Consider the extent to which standard designs may be applied and use these where appropriate.
From the information in the customer order provide Engineering department with project requirements, site plans and other data on field conditions to ensure optimum results.
Populate and provide input to the corporate and departmental databases used to track customer and related network information.
Support and provide input to management for the customizing of off the shelf tools to meet corporate requirements.
Support the preparation of operating, monitoring and audit procedures for new systems and provide input to existing procedures to reflect changes in current processes.
Participate in peer review and data validations of records related to recently completed orders.
Load basic configurations in telecom devices such as routers and switches under the direction of senior staff.
Remotely access telecom devices in the corporate network, such as routers and switches, to confirm device parameters match what is documented in databases.
Provide input to Method of Procedures documents covering design feasibility, scheduling, tasks, risk assessment, etc.
Provide support to the development, documentation and writing procedures in relation to database tools and their operation.
Provide input to specific parts of the program operating manual, as assigned in conjunction with the preparation or modification of programs by management.
Provide input to revisions for manuals.
Update and maintain all related system data files, tables, sketches glossaries, etc, as changes occur, in order to maintain data integrity.
Extract data in predefined various report formats from databases as required by users. Review and analyze reports to determine data discrepancies using set logic.
Write basic programs for production of reports and where data discrepancies exist, provide input to management for modifying databases as appropriate.
Communicate effectively and appropriately, when meeting with customers or Sales Rep’s to clarify service requests.
Comply with customer specific required communications protocols and conventions.
Provide input and specify the purchase of telecom equipment and other related material as per customer order.
Produce standard customer service sketches, using Visio.
Visit customer sites and document cable routing, equipment locations, power breaker numbers and site contacts.
Provide input to standard testing practices for the acceptance testing of fiber cable characteristics, Ethernet services, and any other services offered by HOT.
Provide input to the recommendation for the purchase of test sets.
Request local loop orders to be placed for telecom services between customer sites and Hydro One Telecom’s point of presence, with Bell, Rogers, and other partner companies.
Provide service demarcation and contacts for our local loop partner companies and building property management groups.
Submit all relevant information to the Telecom Operations Commissioning Group for each new customer service or net new device provisioned.
Work with tower lease contractors to arrange for shelters and antennas for installation. Interface with technicians and construction crews, arranging for site access and site safety monitors.
Attend progress meetings, providing others with a verbal and written status, including project in-service dates.
Provide input on ways to improve on the customer service provisioning process.
Assist in the acceptance testing of customer services.
Work with equipment vendors, external contractors and internal staff to install equipment, material and cable associated with the provisioning of a customer service.
Submit Change Request notifications for the installation and commissioning of customer services.
Request and analyze external contractor test results.
Follow procedures and practices, safety or otherwise, when visiting a Telecom site or arranging for work to be done.
Monitor costs and keep as low as possible commensurate with job requirements.
Review costs and provide explanations for variances from estimated costs.
Assist in the evaluation of new products/services.
Selection Criteria:
Requires a good knowledge of fiber optic technology, telecommunications, IP networking, routing protocols, provisioning internet services, BaaS, SDWAN and project management to advise on customer service designs and plans related to the maintenance and installation of telecommunication equipment and services.
Requires good knowledge of English to communicate effectively with all contacts involved in accomplishing work objectives. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training (Grade XII plus 5 years).
Requires experience in the design, construction, installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment and services to be aware of the various characteristics and application of procedures associated with operating and maintenance problems.
Requires experience to be familiar with the organization structure, the role and responsibilities, procedures and practices typical of a telecom service provider.
Hands on router configuration experience is considered an asset.
Requires experience with various software applications such as MS Word, Excel, MS Project, and Visio to produce various technical reports.
A period of over 4 years and up to and including 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
